on september 11, 1995, blur released their fourth studio album, the great escape, at the height of the britpop movement

following the success of parklife, the album continued blur’s take on everyday british life, but with a more cynical, theatrical and darker tone. damon albarn’s lyrics explore loneliness, detachment, middle-class alienation and the contradictions of British society in the mid-1990s

the album debuted at number one in the uk and was later certified triple platinum, despite the tensions within the band at the time
