@greatplainsmarimba semi-finals!

i'm okay with how this turned out; i broke a few times and missed a couple notes but honestly for the most part i think i did alright.

thanks to @dan_winder1 for videoing ๐Ÿ™

American Percussion Seminar 2024

Had so much fun learning new stuff and making new friends. Geniunely one of the best weeks of my life, surrounded by some of the best percussionists in the world and by many others my age who are likeminded. 11/10 would recommend and will be coming back next year! Thank you APS!

Performed- Saudade ( @jewy.eng )

lil bit of the opening of samsara

definitely need to work on making everything more fluid, musically and physically - especially the first line. stuff to remember for next time ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ

also the 2nd interval part is REALLY hard so don't flame me for botching that

Same Blue! wow this was hard. in the end i ended up getting off beat and it just messed the whole last chorus up. i kinda just improv-ed to make up for it but hopefully it was fine. in the video i was kinda upset w myself but looking back it was rlly hard, so im good w how i did ๐Ÿฅธ

for future reference, i think i need to work on my kick speed bc it was almost always late/slow, and the entrances for them weren't at the level i want them to be. frankly my hands felt fine but i think my kick really threw me off, especially near the ending. as you can tell i really struggled there...but im optimistic that this is my floor. can only go up from here ๐Ÿฅธ. hopefully in a year from now ill be able to look back and see how much ive grown on the DS. tbh i love playing kit, but its 100% my weakest part of percussion, and i really want to get it to the level it should be at.

played w/ @musiclessonswithcameron and @willius.exe

new project- In Venus!!! not rlly sure what my timeframe is to learn it but i definitely want to perform at some point.

1: double lateral section which is probably one of the hardest parts of the piece tbh. i really need to work on 2 important things: 1).making all my strokes sound even bc i tend to favor mallet 4 (which is from rotation and speed), and 2). spacing out each lateral more.

after the lateral section, it immediately moves into the improv chorale.

(btw i had to split up the videos into chunks bc instagram doesn't like long videos)

2-5: more chorale.

i like the 4th and 5th slides the most bc it tells more of a story, rather than just insanely hard octave hits in the right hand and 1-handed roll in the left. by @_bongo_ben

i hate snare sm

day 1 of working on the snare etude- got thru the first 2 lines. kind of upset with how slow i work but again, snare is not my thing, so naturally i learn stuff slower. however, i am very proud with the fact that im starting to mark notes on my music and other things to help me practice (eg. notate where the downbeats are) and that all has really helped me get a lot better with my overall understanding. while today was frustrating, i know that these habits i'm building will help me in the future

1- vid- first two lines. again, this is day 1 of learning so it's not great. my biggest goals as of right now are to work on buzzes and stick closer to tempo.

2- markings and notes that i put to help me. would highly recommend

gear haul lol

1: I got a Pius graduated set from @john_drums_ a couple weeks ago that I have loved. I already had a pair of 2's, and those combined with the grad set will make for some pretty cool combos. From @dallaspercussion, I picked up some Mark Ford series (812's and 813's) that I'm planning on using for articulate mallets and/or practice mallets, and a pair of Ludwig Albert 5002's that I'm going to use for left hand oriented pieces.

2: Humes and Berg Tower stick bag, I'm not 100% sure how I plan to use the separators inside but I have a few ideas that I want to hash out before school starts. I'm also not really sure which mallets to use, since I don't want to take my really nice stuff for open use, so I think the mallets/sticks I showed in the photo will probably be what I end up taking

3. I've really been focusing on marimba lately and not enough on snare, and have kinda shot myself in the foot with that one. To bounce back I decided to get some snare solo/technique books from @steveweissmusic so I can get myself up to speed, and hit the ground running once school starts

today and tomorrow i have band leadership camp (new bass captain who dis ๐Ÿฅธ๐Ÿฅธ๐Ÿฅธ)

also hoping to hit some drumkit sometime this weekend ๐Ÿ‘€ by @_bongo_ben

UNT APS is the best thing to ever happen

(btw the marimba I was practicing on had a bunch of broken keys and the height adjustment system was broken)

1. digging into the "Bittersweet" portion of Saudade- really trying to bring out the melody and be more aware of phrasings. also sorry about the 2nd half awkward choppy part- i haven't played on a 5 oct in several weeks and it was also too short for me so i kind of had to make do. frankly im just happy to keep my hands moving
2. verano portenฬƒo- new Pius piece i got. really excited to play it but it's definitely going to take a while. also my trad grip is kinda buns
3/4. first photo was the monday concert and second is the tuesday concert. really great pieces!

UNT's American Percussion Seminar tomorrow- kind of nervous but really excited to learn so much more about how to get better!
For the student recital on Thursday, I want to play a suite consisting of Moon Chasers (bc yk...Mark Ford) and Saudade since they are passionate pieces and I figured they would work well together.
1: slowly building up the 8thlet runs of Saudade- I frequently miss notes in this section simply because of how fast it is, especially in my left hand. thankfully if i miss a few notes it isn't that noticeable, but i'd obviously still prefer to not miss any
2: 16th note octave split that i ultimately left out on the recording i made in may but now im really striving to make it work for the UNT guys. as of right now i think i can pull it off though
3. this is a transition between sixteenths and triplets where i frequently rush the 16ths; today i took it slower
