A return to the Riordanverse is always a welcome boon to reality, but these Nico Di Angelo Adventures books are comforting even beyond their context. Following Nico on his journey of despair and depression and loneliness as it evolves to include love and acceptance of himself and his circumstances is a comfort to all who can relate to his experiences.
🖤🖤🖤
Nico and Will understand each other in a way that should make all other relationships take notes (except Percy and Annabeth— y’all are perfect too). Watching the contrasting dynamics between Nico/Will and Hazel/Frank allowed for reflection onto relationships that is not often present in children’s media. This book, and its predecessor, are valuable and noteworthy additions to Riordan’s canon that will introduce empathy to young readers in a palatable and engaging manner, whilst also touching the hearts of readers who have been with the series a long time and can always use a reminder to make the world a kinder place.

Shoutout to my roommate for the book recommendation! I really enjoyed jumping into a new fantasy world with this one. And shoutout to my cousin for making this beautiful bookmark!

MILD spoilers ahead🖋️

As I read the book I kept trying to determine which kingdom I wanted to side with and honestly I think I landed on…none of them? I like Princess Cleo more and more as she gains agency throughout the narrative, and the same is true of Jonas. Not gonna lie Magnus and his incestuous love for his sister (I simply don’t care that she’s not actually his sister, they were raised together, it is more incestuous than Jace and Clary) was not my cup of tea and that man was very quickly ready to murder people when she turned down his advances.
So based on characters, I guess I’m siding with Auranos but I definitely want to know why they are entitled to hoard all the resources and I don’t feel good about siding with them. I would pick Paelsia because of Jonas but he’s a bit intense at times (not that I blame him and honestly I can see a world where he becomes my favorite in future books).

The pacing of the narrative was a bit stop and go, but I kept up quite well and was never too off put by it. The only exception being that none of the romances felt believable because they were all so rushed. ⚠️SPOILER HERE⚠️When Theon suddenly decides he’s in love with Cleo it was predictable and vague and then he’s dead.

My positive thoughts outweigh my negative thoughts and I do think I will continue this series in the near future!

Thank you Flat Iron for sending me an e-ARC of this book!

Most Importantly- would I recommend this book? Yes✅

On to the review (non-spoilery!)🖋️

The world contained within Alchemy of Secrets is akin to its predecessors Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart. You are welcomed in to the world through an interesting second-person POV that appears sporadically throughout the book (tho I wish it appeared one final time because the conclusion of the novel begs questions about how these chapters fit into the lore of the third-person narrative).

Holland, our protagonist, is at times endearing and at times painfully unaware. The men she finds herself acquainted with are deeply fascinating and yet I fear she does not inquire nearly enough about any of them to fully flesh out their characters.

I am unsure if this novel will have a sequel as Garber’s others have, but I sincerely hope it does because I feel this story could have benefited from at least another 100 pages.
