I Traveled to Puerto Rico in August. Of course the hardest part of traveling is determining what book to take. I ended up choosing As Long as the Lemon Tree Grows along with my Kindle. It turned out to be a good reading month, even though I didn’t finish anything. Being a busy mom, I try to remind myself that it’s not about how many books I finish, but just the time I can take doing what I enjoy. ☀️📚

Eternal Ruin By Tigest Girma

“Like all ruinous things, he came from the abyss.”

When one dark secret is revealed, another appears. Eternal Ruins is the continuation of Immortal Dark, and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it did! For the sake of not giving anything away for those who haven’t started this series - it was a wild ride worth getting on!

Immortal Dark By Tigest Girma

𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘰𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺.”

The story primarily takes place in an elite university where humans and vampires coexist. Kidan, our main protagonist, is an heiress from Uxlay University who has family lineage to the school but was removed as a child after the murder of her family. The story begins with Kidan Adane, 19, searching for her missing sister and deciding to infiltrate the university to find her and the vampire she suspects caused the disappearance, Susensyo Sagad. We follow Kidan as she navigates through Uxlay University and unravels dark secrets.

This book is unlike any I have ever read, and I enjoyed every moment of it! All the characters were so layered and complex. The book explores how deep we can go to seek vengeance and features morally gray characters, along with the pain and hurt from those we love. I loved the way the vampires were described and explored in the story.

I am excited to continue the series with Eternal Ruin. 🤓📖

Goodbye, April! 📚🤓

Overall, April was a good month despite how busy it was. While I did encounter some disappointing reads and two books I ended up DNFing (not listed here), it ended on a strong note with Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma. That book gripped me to my core! 😩

Books I read in April:
-Immortal Dark By Tigest Girma
-The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
-All This Twisted Glory By Tahereh Mafi
-Trial of the Sun Queen By Nisha J. Tuli

How was your April?

Until next time, March! I finished two books this month, with Weavingshaw By Heba Al-Wasity being my absolute favorite!

Weavingshaw is a gothic fantasy about a woman named Leena who was cursed with seeing the dead. She has kept this secret close to her, afraid that if others found out, they would send her to an asylum. However, when her brother becomes severely unwell, she is in need of lifesaving medication or else her brother will die. This is when Leena barters her secret with The Saint of Silence, who makes trades in secrets. The Saint of Silence accepts her deal by having her agree to assist him in locating a spirit at the haunted Weavingshaw estate. This story has a dark gothic feel. While this is a dark fantasy, it explored heavy themes centered around the experiences of refugee displacement and the treatment they receive from others.

This book was absolutely incredible - from the writing, world building and characters, I could not put this book down! I am anxiously waiting to hear when the next one will be released! Highly recommend!

Yellow Wife By Sadeqa Johnson is a historical fiction novel which follows Pheby Brown, who was born on a plantation in Virginia. Pheby grows up being told that when she turns eighteen years old, she will be free. However, when she turns eighteen, she is ultimately sold to Rubin Lapier, the owner of Devil’s Half-Acre, a well-known jail where slaves are tortured and sold. Pheby is forced to become his mistress.

Wow, this was an incredibly harrowing read. Through Pheby’s point of view, we experience the horrific treatment and cruelty she and those around her suffered. Pheby was an incredible woman who demonstrated the strength, selflessness, and resilience of a woman and mother. While there were painful moments for me to get through, these were the horrific realities of this time. I appreciated Sadeqa Johnson’s storytelling abilities; it was devastatingly captivating.

I highly recommend this novel.

Take Me Back By Amanda Rodriguez is a collection of poems that explores trauma, healing, and self- reflection.

I found this book to be incredibly powerful. The collection of poems was masterfully structured to demonstrate the growth and development of the pain and challenges one may go through in these experiences. I highly recommend it!
