SONG FOR THE UNKNOWN LAND

this poem is inspired by the protest march for gaza that takes place in cork city every saturday. more specifically, it's based on the experience of watching it pass by the windows of aunty nellie's sweet shop, where I work.

the few customers that do come in at this time pay little to no attention to the protest, although it's impossible to ignore. forcing a smile and raising my voice to be heard over shouts of "how many kids have you killed today?" or "hospitals are not a target", I am hit with a bizarre wave of mixed feelings. guilt, anger, confusion, hopelessness, detachment and ultimately a deep admiration for all those taking part.

the poem contains two split narratives; one that takes place in the sweet shop, and another that depicts a ritual child sacrifice. the first uses plain, detached language and is often devoid of emotion. in the second, we are drawn into a grotesque spectacle that is impossible to look away from, and forced to confront our own guilt by the end of the poem.

what is happening in palestine is beyond me, but by turning a blind eye out of fear or shame I would become part of the problem. by @_boypoet

COOL

this is my poem cool, first written in october 2023 but i've been scrapping and reworking it since then. i guess i feel a certain pressure to make it more "deep" or serious when it's only asking to be silly and witty.

in the broadest terms, it's about a male archetype who crafts an intelligent and advanced persona which only serves to distance him from meaningful relationships. i see this character in many places in the real and fictional world but i also see him in myself. i think i, like many people (mostly men) would rather be seen as cool or different than known as normal or cringe.

but there's nothing wrong with this really. i just had fun picking out the ironies and contradictions of the über cool guy. maybe there's some message about the pitfalls of creating a persona which leads to deep loneliness, but nothing too heavy-handed. the tone of the poem weaves in and out of silly and serious (one of my favourite things to do) but it's a fun one at the end of the day. by @_boypoet

FLOWERS

i recently spent a magical few days in the coastal paradise that is the beara peninsula and took photos of the most beautiful or striking wildflowers i found.

flowers have a deep connection to the land that grows them and the people who have lived off that land for centuries. i feel like the most true thing you can learn about a place is what kind of flowers grow there. people come and go, and cultures change and evolve but the land, and the flowers, always stay the same.

the way people name flowers shows humans' playful and curious attitude to nature and language. whoever came up with the name for foxglove had a great imagination. the japanese name for cornflower translates as arrow-wheel chrysanthemum which is pretty badass if you ask me. looking at the names across languages also brings out connections between flowers and plant families i wouldn't have noticed.

flowers also have a deep connection to poetry and aesthetic beauty because they can evoke specific emotions, places and seasons. so many layers of meaning can be contained within a simple flower. the age-old symbol of ephemeral beauty in japan, the sakura, has inspired countless poems since the ancient days. flowers represent so many dualities that fascinate me: they are at once male and female, birthing and dying, wild and tame, sexual and innocent.

the name of this account, is a hybrid of the german words for flower (Blume, f.) and the verb to bloom (blühen). it also contains the word me and symbolises me as a flower containing all the beauty and contradictions that flowers have. i guess i also just like the way it sounds and looks written down (and louissexypoet was taken). by @_boypoet
