“In her work 'woven history' (2016), Lisa depicts a sunrise on the front and a sunset on the back of an iridescent breast plate often gifted to brides from Papua New Guinea (PNG) through to the Torres Strait Islands. The trade routes, kinship connections and customary practices shared from PNG to the Torres Strait Islands are still practiced today. Some 10,000 years ago Papua New Guinea was connected to Australia, people could walk down through Cape York. Nowadays, this part of the world is one of the most fragile ecosystems with every single one of the hundreds of islands holding its own unique history and ecosystem. These relationships are close to Lisa because of her time spent living in Papua New Guinea where she taught photography, print making, got married traditionally and birthed her three children. This story of connection across the waters is not a new one and in 'woven history' Lisa reminds us of our family, our long history with people throughout Melanesia pre and post colonisation. How quickly the Australian consciousness forgets our closest relatives.”

“Probably the most important thing to know about Lisa is that Country (our mother/greatest maternal figure from which we are born and return to), her three children and the places she has called home are key to everything that she does. They make up her family. They are her weft. Although she is a printmaker first, she is also a jeweller, fashion designer, weaver, sculptor and obsessive doodler using drawing as her main thinking tool. You will see repeating themes and materials. Lots of threes - her children. Lots of red string. Fate. Umbilical cord.”

'after ever here' is an exhibition by Lisa Waup that brings together printed works, utilitarian vessels, sculptures, and body adornment, each imbued with layered stories of material history. The exhibition centres on textiles both found and gifted, whose fibres already carry histories and memory. Through her practice, Waup extends these narratives, reanimating objects once set aside and granting them renewed life and altered intention.

By observing and honouring the histories embedded in these materials, Waup reveals their intimacy and beauty, transforming them into works that adapt and evolve. In 'after ever here', Waup traces the enduring significance of materiality across time, while inscribing her own voice threaded into their continuing story.

Opening this Thursday 5.30pm @delmargallery, Curated by Coby Edgar @_budju_ , ‘Djalkiri: The Bula’bula Arts Archiving Project’

In 2024 Bula’bula Arts in Ramingining, Northern Territory began an important 18-month journey to protect and revitalise the community’s archive of cultural history. This experience sparked pride, creativity, and a strong determination to safeguard heritage, inspiring artists to remake and reinterpret their families’ artworks, a selection of which are on display in Djalkiri – the Bula’bula Arts Archiving Project. The title of the show, Djalkiri (footsteps) was chosen by the artists to signify the journey forward while honouring those who came before. Join us to reflect on Ramingining through the past 40 years as we make footsteps into the future.

This multi-year project was supported by the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM), the Gordon Darling Foundation, Wales Family Foundation, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and Creative Australia.

On Saturday we celebrated the opening of Lisa Waup’s exhibition ‘after ever here’, guest curated by Coby Edgar!

We extend our gratitude to Frank Abrahams and Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation for facilitating a Welcome to Country, and to Ararat Rural City Mayor Councillor Bob Sanders for joining us to introduce Lisa and Coby.

Lisa and Coby worked with the Gallery team all last week to install the exhibition, and hosted VCE Art Making and Exhibiting students from Marian College on Friday to talk about the exhibition development process. Thank you Lisa and Coby!

Join artist Lisa Waup and guest curator Coby Edgar for an in-conversation to celebrate the opening of Lisa’s exhibition 'after ever here', on Saturday 28th February 2026, 2pm.

Lisa Waup’s ‘after ever here’ is a thoughtfully chosen offering for the Ararat community comprising of new works, works never seen by the public and a few old favourites. Spanning just over a decade of her practice, from intimate body adornment and subtle works on paper to epic Tapa cloth and wonderous sculptural pieces, Waup consciously chose works that are based in the realm of textile but push the boundaries of our expectations of the medium.

Revelling in the opportunity to playfully collaborate, Waup and guest curator Coby Edgar worked together to present a selection of precious markers of place and time. after ever here is a retrospective exhibition, giving us the chance to celebrate the complexity of Waup’s practice, the prolific nature of her career and to see into her wonderful world a little deeper.
