Man. Where does one start?!

Having a spinal cord injury has changed my life in ways I never imagined. Some days were spent crying, anxious, angry, heartbroken, you name it. I felt ALL the emotions. Some days I couldn’t see the possibility of a beautiful life.

I don’t talk much about being in a wheelchair because I have never wanted to make that my identity. Because it isn’t. I’m still the beautiful, gifted, intelligent Bulane, only that currently, instead of walking, I’m rolling around in my wheels. 😂

But I wanted to share this because I know there is someone on the other side of this screen who wants to give up, who doesn’t see the beautiful role they play in society. “It’s just one life,” you say, “what does it matter anyway ?” I say it’s one life too many.

If you’re reading this, please hear me: your life matters. Your presence matters. The world would not be the same without you in it. Imagine days without your contagious laugh even in serious moments, imagine family holidays without that secret delicious recipe of yours that leaves everyone at the table licking their fingers even minutes after the meal, what about those silly fights that you have with your siblings then minutes later one of you is making popcorn in the kitchen while the other finds the perfect family movie to watch, imagine an empty house without the echo of your dad jokes that no one actually finds funny but they laugh because they love you and because of just how unfunny they really are…I could go on. Imagine a life without the things that make you YOU.

I know what it’s like to grieve the life you thought you would have. I know what it’s like to wonder if things will ever get better. But I also know that some of the most beautiful moments of my life happened after the day I thought everything had fallen apart.
So if all you can do today is take one more breath, say one more prayer, or hold on for one more day, let that be enough.

There is still purpose for you here. There is still beauty ahead of you. And your story is not over. If anyone didn’t tell you today, YOU ARE LOVED.
