Nobody tells you this before you book a wedding photographer, so I will.

There's a whole industry built around making your wedding look like something you don't want it to be.

Perfect because it's "editorial."

Curated to death because it's for the "magazine."

Poses everyone else does because it makes your wedding more "elevated" and "intentional."

Hours of your actual wedding spent standing around so someone can get "the shot" — while you miss cocktail hour.

I'm not doing any of that.

You paid for those goddamn canapés, and you're going to stuff your face full of them.

Swipe through for the full list (slide 10 is a bit controversial and might get me into trouble).

Your wedding isn't a performance.

It's a party. 🥂 Let's keep it that way.

If that's the kind of photographer you want documenting your day, comment "REAL" and let's talk.

P.S. 2027 dates are booking fast, so reach out now. Just do it.

🔥HOT TAKE 🌶️

I just saw someone describe themselves as a "candid editorial photographer" and I need a minute to digest that.

CONFUSING??????

😵If it is for me, then I don't know how you as a couple would feel!

Candid means unposed.

Happening naturally.

Not directed.

Editorial means posed.

Curated.

Directed to fit an aesthetic and look.

These are totally opposite things.

You cannot be candid AND editorial at the same time.

What they actually mean when they say "candid editorial":

"We do editorial – lots of posing and styling – but we've realised people want both so we're adding 'candid' to make it sound more natural."

😭Its equivalent of "I want fine dining restaurant with the soul of street food"

Here's the test:
If the photographer is directing you, positioning you, adjusting your pose, telling you where to look – it's not candid.

It might be a beautiful photo.

But it's not candid by any means.

Candid is when the photographer disappears and captures what's actually happening.

Editorial is when the photographer creates what's happening.

One isn't better than the other.

And both can be amazing 😍 😍 😍

My advice to you.

👍Ask the photographer, "If you had to pick one, are you primarily editorial or candid in approach?"

Then sit back and listen to what they say and decide if it's right away you taken in By Kevin - Wedding Photography Sydney by @_by.kevin

Here's the problem.

You've been trying to find a photographer for your wedding and you realise —
every wedding photographer looks the same.Every wedding photographer looks the same.

The same good looking couples.
The same Vogue-perfect styling.
Curated to perfection.
Timeless. Editorial. Elevated. Intentional.

And you're sitting there thinking —
do they actually care about what I want?

Here's what I know.

You don't want perfect.
You want real.
You want to spend as much time as possible with your people.

I'm here to capture the real stuff — what happens when you forget the camera's there. The in-between bits, the genuine reactions, the moments that make your day yours.
No faking it. No "give me a candid smile" nonsense.

That's what you care about.

And that's exactly what I'm here to capture.
If this is what you want —
let's chat.

Pricing and availability below.

Three weddings over three days.
13,919 photos taken.

Hours of video footage.

Probably about 120 different combinations of family photos.

6 coffees and plenty of canapes consumed.
A lot of sparkling water, maybe a few wines and a beer here and there.

Plenty of hugs all around.

All of this for the most incredible bunch of people I get to call my clients.

It takes a team to make it all happen and I wanted to say thank you to each and everyone of you that work tirelessly to make their wedding incredible.

I am sitting here on a Monday morning with a sore back and shoulders, and a slight hangover.

But you know what.

Id do it again tomorrow, the next day and the next year.

Because it's for my clients and only their happiness matters.

And I'll work my ass off to make sure you get everything you deserve.

Thank you Jess and Daniel, Eunice and Mark and Issy and Johnson.

You make me love my job even more each day.

Beyond grateful 🙏

People always ask what it's actually like working with me, so here it is.

Anyone who knows me well enough will know I say it like it is without the bullshit.

We'll grab a coffee/beer/wine before your wedding, so by the time I turn up with a camera, I'm not a stranger.

You get direct WhatsApp access the whole way through so you don't have to sit there typing emails back and forth.

You don't email you friend so you don't have to communicate that way with me!

On the day itself, I only need 15-30 minutes for portraits.
That's it.

Not two hours while your guests have to wait around for you, because that's awkward AF for them.
Then it's straight back to the party, because that's where you actually want to be.

The rest of the time, I'm not directing anything. I'm just paying careful attention to your people, the chaos, the bits you'd never think to ask for but will be glad exist later.

I'll be ninjaring around and catching people unaware.

If your wedding has cultural traditions, I've taken the time beforehand to actually understand them, so nothing gets missed or fumbled on the day.

I lead when you need it, and step right back when you don't.

No excessive posing. No editorial magazine performing.
No hidden agendas.

Just someone who's actually there with you by your side working my heart out to make sure you'e so damn happy 🥂

If this sounds like your vibe, you know where to find me.

Weddings don't need to feel like a production.
Somewhere along the way, having a bigger team, more equipment, more people running around became the standard — and a day that feels more like a shoot than your actual wedding. That's just not how I work.

I show up solo. One person doing photo and video, actually paying attention to you and your people — not managing a crew. No paparazzi energy, no circus, just someone who's actually there.

You still walk away with great photos and film. But more importantly, you walk away having actually been at your wedding — not performing for a camera crew all day.

If that sounds like your kind of day, I think we'll get along just fine.

Chinese and Korean traditions, woven beautifully into one wedding day.

These are the types of weddings that excite me, the ones that honour family traditions passed down from generation.

It is often a bit chaotic, messy but trust me it is all worth it in the end.

The groom picked up his bride and brought her home to meet his new family for a traditional tea ceremony, honouring the families coming together, this is a Chinese tradition that has been done for centuries.

That evening, they celebrated with a Korean Paebaek, a sweet and playful tradition centred around honouring their parents and family with a few games along the way said to predict how many children they’ll have. It's such a beautiful loving ceremony that is very Korean drama like even down to the music they play during the ceremony!

Different cultures, different traditions, but the same thing at the heart of it all: family, love, and two people bringing their worlds together that would make their families proud.

"Timeless. Elevated. Editorial. Authentic." Sound familiar? I am sure you have looked at a lot of photographers website and they often use the same buzzwords — but nobody tells you what they actually mean for YOUR wedding day. 👰🤵

If a photographer's overall vision is getting that "editorial" look for magazine features, that naturally means more posing, more direction and ultimately, more time away from your guests.

There's nothing wrong with that style and I know plenty of great photographers who are far better than I am at it — but you deserve to know what you're signing up for and what this means on your wedding day, what they will prioritise and how your photo gallery will look like.

My approach is a little different.

15 minutes for great photos, then straight back to cocktail hour with the people you love.
Efficient, natural, and focused on YOUR day — not trying to impress anyone or create a portfolio.

Editorial or documentary — which one are you?

Nobody told them to laugh.

Nobody said "Can you do that again?."

Nobody was watching for the camera at all.

With everything you see on social media, and the pressure to make your wedding look and feel a certain way, it's easy to lose sight of what actually matters.

I'll take people over performance, any day of the week.

Because when you're fully present — not posing, not performing — you get the moments you never even realised would matter most.

When you're with your best people, your best side just comes out.

And there's no faking that part.

The day happens once.

The photos last forever.

Might as well spend it actually living it. 🥂

If this is the kind of wedding you're after, let's chat — no pressure, just a conversation about your day.

Three years after getting engaged… and finally, the day has magically happened! ✨💍

But honestly, these two have already been through some pretty serious relationship milestones.

5 house moves. Countless IKEA furniture builds. 🫢😂

If you can survive assembling IKEA furniture together, I’m pretty sure you can survive anything marriage throws at you!

Jokes aside, it’s so special seeing two people who have built such a strong foundation together finally say, “I do.” 🤍

And now, after all those years, they finally get to call each other husband and wife. 🥂

One person. Two roles. Zero production feel.

People think good hybrid coverage needs a full crew. But more people usually just means more cameras, more direction, more of you feeling watched. I'd rather work around your day than make you work around me — moving between photo and video quickly and quietly, so you stay present and I just catch what's actually happening.

The goal was never a wedding that looks like a film set. It's a wedding that still feels like yours when you look back on it.

If you're after a fully polished, film-production-like package with all the bells and whistles, honestly, you're better off looking elsewhere. If you want what I do, let's chat.

Less crew. Less interruption. More room to just live it. 🎥📸
