One year ago, my friend rested.

What followed weeks later was some serious adulting in a bid to celebrate her life. She had this welcoming aura and so much wisdom. She knew when you just needed a hand, a hug, advice, or even a good calling out. 😹

That's the kind of friendship I enjoyed during what would end up being the shortest but fullest friendship I've ever had. To be loved by her was to be loved wholly!

No one prepares you for the weight of the wreaths, the pain of choosing an outfit for the deceased, or the devastating change of their pronouns from "Her" to "It." 💔

Even in her absence, I've been consistently supported and surrounded by the extremely beautiful community she created. I'm sure she looks down at us and is so proud of how we've kept on keeping on throughout the year.

I miss you so much Aluoch, every day, always!
Keep resting and watching over us, My Girl. 🌸🫶🏾 by @_cardine

Growing up, I listened to so much Rhumba, so seeing Fally Ipupa perform live was already a full-circle moment. But of course, the Luhya touch had to come in because we’re Congolese too😂🇰🇪🇨🇩❤️ taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @_cardine

@spotifygreasytunes in +254 brought out my many hats, and btw how cool is it to wear them alongside my friends (wanoma sana, most not pictured here🤦🏾). Every community brought out their A game to celebrate our diversity, culture, talent, and creativity.

An obvious highlight for me was the Ongeza Volume x EQUAL workshop, and if I could echo what mwalimu @kerubo_kophen said, Your Voice is your competitive advantage. Don't shrink it to fit the room. Build rooms where it can be heard.
(I hope wale wa homework wamefanya! 👀)

Big S/O to @abigael_diana and the brilliant, intentional community you’ve built @ongeza_volume , @coster_ojwang for allowing us to share in your vision for @thefishermanexperience , and to the @spotifyafrica team for continuing to spotlight the Kenyan Music space.
Onward 🌸
