This poem was inspired by the score from the Academy Award-winning film Sinners.“Free… For A Forever” was written as a tribute to my late brother, Tyrick-Smith Carter, whose life was tragically taken far too soon.Grief has been one of the most difficult journeys I’ve ever had to walk. Through it all, poetry has become my refuge. It has given me comfort, clarity, and a place to give shape to emotions that often feel impossible to explain.Ironically, reciting this poem was harder than writing it.It felt like peeling back a wound I had finally managed to cover. But I realized healing isn’t about pretending the wound no longer exists. Sometimes it’s about having the courage to uncover it, speak through it, and let others know they aren’t carrying their pain alone.This was necessary.I wanted to put my words, my voice, and my vulnerability into the world in the hope that someone else might feel seen, understood, or inspired to tell their own story.If this poem moves you, I hope it also reminds you to create. Write. Speak. Paint. Sing.
