After 14 years of renovation work the Cologne Opera has finally reopened with Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. Designed by Willhelm Riphahn and completed in 1957, it is a mid-century modern jewel, beautifully restored to how Riphahn originally conceived it. Surprisingly the renovations uncovered the original color scheme of the walls and ceilings, ranging from deep blue, to burgundy, pale blues and cream tones. The colors heighten the contours of the space and bestow the architecture with an exquisite elegance.
