I got to teach a course this semester at Georgia Tech on documentary filmmaking and urbanism. We covered a lot of terrain and ended the term by making short films about how the 1996 Olympics transformed Atlanta.

What a pleasure to spend several months thinking about movies with twelve curious, creative, and kind students hailing from a variety of majors and graduate programs. We found common ground in the belief that if we want better cities, we have to tell better stories about them.

New directing work out…
New Daniel Platzman song drop…
New debut from my cat Saba….
 (Link in bio)
Huge thanks to @danielplatzman who made an absolute bop of a song and entrusted us to tell a ridiculous story with it.

And what a team. A delight to write, direct, and edit this with @dustchambers
@tillt.creative are producing heroes of fortitude, integrity and fun. @wilhughes as DP helped sharpen and expand our vision. @emilycapers91 with bursting creative powers made incredible sets and props (a cardboard city overnight!), @luke__hyland is an ace AD that elevated everyone’s game, and of course the motion capture team of @actorcapture that steered our absurd animation dreams into reality.

Learned a lot making this. Excited for it to roar into the world. Meow.

Earlier this summer we worked with Atlanta-based visual storyteller Daniel Schwartz to create an introductory video about our approach to landscape architecture through our interdisciplinary studio practice. Lovely insight on the matter by our co-founding principal Carley Rickles.

Thank you @_danielschwartz for your thoughtful work, and to @naugle for contributing video from our collaboration at The Historic Bruce Street School.

As a side note (Jennifer here 👋), I’ll tell anyone who will listen that working in collaboration with a landscape architect has completely transformed the way I practice architecture, and I’m so grateful to Carley for that. Interdisciplinary is the way, y’all. by @_danielschwartz

Finally sharing the trailer for Where We Grow Older. It’s been on a festival/screening run since June, which I’ve done a shabby job of promoting. But I’m excited to be in Mendrisio tonight to give a presentation at the @usi_accademia with @boragio about it and the previous two films in the series that I made with the @canadiancentreforarchitecture. A big thank you to @bekalemoine for the invitation to think/talk publicly about the intersection of filmmaking and architecture.

The documentary was a long time in the making, and I’m still filled with gratitude for the collaborators and protagonists that made it all possible. To get to make a film is a stroke of good fortune, and a film that’s made with and about care, even more so.

Today is the world premiere of Where We Grow Older, the newest film I made with the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Screening as the opener of the @arquiteturasfilmfestival . It’s the third and final documentary in a series we began working on in 2019, and I’m feeling a lot of things as we come to the end of this endeavor.

Directing these pieces was some of the most challenging and fun work I’ve done, and I’m beyond grateful and humbled to have been invited on this journey with the @canadiancentreforarchitecture, led by Giovanna Borasi (@boragio). With its history as a museum, archive, and book publisher, the CCA is now also a place where films get produced and reach global audiences.

It’s particularly sweet to end the trilogy with Where We Grow Older, a movie that seeks to reframe conversations about how elderly people live in cities and ways that architects and planners can design better spaces for and with them. Like the series’ prior films about homelessness and solo living, this movie is also about loneliness and the transformation of family structures around the world. We are living through a historic moment when typical bonds of kinship are being disrupted in ways big and small, with profound implications for how we find safety and stability in our social lives and give/receive the most meaningful forms of care.

While these films are documents of this moment, they are also calls to rethink how architecture can address large issues and imagine a more humane and compassionate way of living together. I’m proud to have made them with such a wonderful group of people. I’ll be posting more about the film, where it will be screening, and all who helped bring it into existence. Tonight we celebrate. taken in Porto, Portugal by @_danielschwartz
