“To be young, gifted, and Black.” They said earning one degree was hard, so I decided to go ahead and get two. Not only did I complete the B.S. but I also MASTERED it. I am proud to announce that on May 2nd, 2026, I will be graduating from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with a Minor in Chemistry, summa cum laude, with High Distinguished Honors, and my Master of Public Health with a Concentration in Health Behavior, with a perfect 4.0 GPA. I was born and raised in the Campground in Mobile, Alabama, in a single-parent household. My mom earned her degree while raising me, and some of my earliest memories are of us running on 10 plus hour days, me going to school while she went to work and then attended her night classes. My grandmother was in high school when the schools were finally desegregated and always emphasized to my mom and I the importance of higher education for Black people. I was raised by women who made the impossible possible, and I am beyond blessed that God placed them in my life. I would not be where I am today without their sacrifices and guidance. Now, between the three of us, there are three bachelor’s degrees and two master’s degrees, and we are truly living through years of answered prayers to God. I began working toward my degrees at the age of 15 and in just a few weeks, at 21, I will have both my Bachelor’s and Master’s in hand. UAB has challenged me, inspired me, and shaped me in ways I could never have imagined. From late night studying in Sterne to 8 AM labs, countless lab reports, and everything in between, each experience contributed to my growth and resilience. Let me be a clear example that no matter where you are from, you can make something of yourself. At 21, I leave UAB with my Bachelor’s and Master’s in hand, grateful for every challenge, every lesson, and every opportunity. Thank you, UAB, for shaping me, for believing in me, and for being ever faithful and ever loyal🐉. Darrius J. Bushe, MPH, B.S.
