When I was between jobs a year ago, I got to work on my first ever freelance gig for Storm Bowling. It was daunting at first but so much fun to challenge myself and solo this whacky piece. Working with the producer Jordan Rohweder from @skullyrebels was a treat. Let’s just say the vibes were baller throughout the whole process and he brings the fun energy. We had a lot of fun with it and made something we were proud of in the end.

These poor bowling pins and their daily life of getting smashed day in and day out. Embracing the old style of rubberhose was a blast. I loved working with this period style and finding methods to fit this story/project into a 6 week long process. ✨

New Demo Reel!! Take a gander at these pixels!

Hello, hi. Derek here. This is the first demo reel I’ve made in 9 years. It feels lovely getting to show off a small batch of select stuff I’ve got to work on in tandem with my old team of rockstar artists. I was so blessed to work with them for all those years. We really made some cool things.

I’m putting myself out there and meeting new creatives as I look for a new team/studio to put my creative energy into. I’m excited and thankful for whatever path I find myself wandering down. by @_derekloftis

SUPER MEGA WIDE BOY

Character animation practice. I’m trying to be more efficient with my keyframes. I tend to work with “step” keyframes in order to get that frame by frame sort of feeling. I’m trying to utilize all that fancy interpolation and use fewer keyframes. This is a part of my year long work goal to get more efficient with 3D character animation. Yay for Goals!

This character was inspired from becoming a gym going person this year. I got into bouldering at this local bouldering gym. And it turns out I love it and it’s my new addiction.

Whoa! DOUGH JOE is here!! First time that I’ve directed a short! And what a wonderful ride it was. This feels like a major step in my life as an animator and storyteller. I loved working on this and pouring myself into the 3D character animation. Designing the world it takes place in was so much fun as well. Pose to pose stop motion character animation is a lot of work, but so worth it! No interpolation on them keyframes yo!

Huge thanks to my boss for funding it by letting me ignore client work for a few months. And a big thanks to my team for all the ways they helped me as well.

Full animation - link in bio!!!

Yesterday at work we dropped this teaser for the first short animation I’ve directed. It’s been a wild ride and I’ve learned so much on this journey. I’m excited for the world to see it and all its quirkiness. I’m particularly proud of the character animation since I wasn’t too versed in that skill in the beginning. It’s all done without interpolated keyframes, sooo it’s basically a 3D stop motion KeyPose style. It was so much work to go that route, but it makes it feel really natural. Stay tuned!✨🌭✨

Some old art I was making. The notion of a fungal world. My backyard has a fungal network that’s hard to spot, but if you look closely... there’s a little world in it. I wanted to explore a place in animation that was based on it. A spore filled place with squishy fungal humanoids. A place rooted and based on the period of the Dark Ages. Fungal swords and shields. Basic fungal farming. Fungal alchemists too! It’d be such a vibrant and interesting world! 🍄
