For as long as I can remember, I’ve known Dolly.
Not known her, of course…but try telling little 5yo me that. Dolly Parton was just one of those people who seemed to have always been there. I was singing 9 to 5 from the backseat of my mom’s car like I had personally experienced the struggles of the working woman. I grew up reading books from the Imagination Library with her name on them. Before I was old enough to really understand who Dolly Parton was, I knew who Dolly was.
As I got older, I started to understand why she meant so much to people. Dolly was a reminder that where you come from is something to be proud of. That you can know exactly who you are without making yourself smaller for anyone else. That you can dream as big as you want, and you don’t have to let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.
And incase you don’t know me well, i REALLYYY love Dolly.
I still remember my mom telling me one day at Dollywood that Dolly was actually there. (Which was extremely mean btw.) I immediately started crying because I was so excited that I genuinely did not know what to do with myself. 😂Dolly was, in fact, not at Dollywood.It was a recording of her voice playing over the speakers.
But somewhere else in that park is another memory that has stuck with me for years. I remember walking through Dollywood and seeing the little chapel. I remember thinking about how special it would be to get married in Dolly’s chapel one day. There was something magical about it to me then.
And maybe that’s what makes Dolly so special.
I know I’m not the only woman with stories like these. There are little girls who grew up with Imagination Library books, women who can remember the first Dolly song they loved, families with Dollywood traditions, daughters who learned her songs from their mothers, and women who saw something in her that made them believe they could be completely themselves and still dream of something bigger.
We all have our own Dolly stories.
