The year began on a bright note, despite a major eye infection that scarred my cornea—later identified as a symptom of my diagnosis. For six years, what I thought were rashes on my legs became more frequent, and by February, I had lost 15 pounds, had no appetite, and was in constant pain. Walking was difficult, and I’d been enduring flare-ups since I was 18. After seeing multiple doctors in different states, I finally connected with a primary care doctor in February, who referred me to rheumatology for the third time.

By September, I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis, and my left kidney was struggling. I was referred to a nephrologist and started medication I initially resisted. A kidney biopsy pushed me physically and emotionally. Since February, I’ve had appointments at least twice a month, hearing mostly bad news. Despite my frustrations and fears, I pushed through—working early shifts, attending church with an aching body despite working Sundays 4am to 1 pm. I needed to be in God’s presence despite my work schedule. September 8 I cried but I cried believing I’d be ok. I started my master’s program the next day.

This year, I spoke to three college classes, smiled through challenges, and gained a second family. Though I struggled silently many days, I’m sharing this to help others feel seen. It’s hard for those not experiencing it to truly understand. I’ve learned to cry without apology, lean on God’s faithfulness, and find strength in the prayers and support around me.

I went back and forth on whether I wanted to share this because I’m a pro of fighting my battles silently. I hate to admit that but I post to raise awareness.

Next year, I’m embracing all that’s planned—the good and the bad—knowing the bad will never outweigh God’s goodness.

I gained a second family this year and my parents and friends and those who love me and who knew have been there every step of the way. They simply kept me going.
