Beautiful has been in my orbit for about 10 years now. Carole King’s music has been in my life for over 30 years. Through countless auditions and iterations of this show, I’ve heard many rumblings of “Why would the actor playing Carole need to play piano?” And the truth is: she doesn’t.

Let me be immensely clear that this post is in no way criticizing the INCREDIBLE work of the many actors telling Carole’s story with their fullest hearts. I am only here to speak to my own experience. Carole is a fully realized artist with her hands on a piano. I, too, have always felt my most authentic self when my hands are on a piano. In fact, part of the reason I grew up playing and singing was because I saw Carole King and thought - girls can do that?? Well then, so can I! In order to honor her, it was extremely important to me to play every note she would have played.

What a gift it is to get to play the person and play the music of one of the people who made me who I am today. I doubt there will ever be another show that allows me to feel as seen and fully-realized as this show does.

Thank you to everyone who made this happen. My gratitude goes beyond language. Today, I sing for you, for Carole, for my mother, for all the little girls/theys out there like me with their hands on a piano thinking “maybe I’ve got something to say.” You do.
