Diet of Worms x Metronome NCH @nationalconcerthall - 28th August 2026

@_dietofworms_ presents an evening of exploratory and immersive sound featuring @hedgling_band @venetiantendencies and Dennis McNulty @machinebetweens Moving between rhythmic intensity, voice, percussion, texture and electroacoustic experimentation, the programme brings together three distinct approaches to contemporary experimental music. From the physical interplay of drums and electronics to fractured vocal performance, found-object ritual, tape decay and spatial sound work, the evening traces a path through tension, atmosphere and sonic transformation.

Curated by Diet of Worms as part of the Metronome series, this is music that rewards deep listening and close attention. taken in National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland by @_dietofworms_

Beat Up Face ‘What’s So Funny About Peace, Love & Understanding’

Diet Of Worms MC

First release by this Dublin trio who previously existed as Spit. I’ve seen earlier vids that showed some violin action, but that has been replaced by Robin Crutchfield-like keyboards here, which are splayed against free rock percussion and electric guitar. The band also mention an attraction to the no wave ethos, so that’s part of the mix. But even the most aggressively out portions of this tape have a more friendly feel than most any 1979 New York City band I could easily name. There’s an oddly good-natured hett to their clangour, no matter how far off track it goes. This might just be my imagination, but then again, the cassette’s title is a tribute to that old Brinsley Schwarz tune, which was itself an ironic comment on the state of things in 1974. So there are at least a couple of layers of irony in the title’s use.

Thanks to @thewiremagazine for this review of Dennis McNulty ‘SP, 2004’ (DOW004) in their latest edition.

Dennis McNulty
SP, 2004
Diet Of Worms
MC

Two takes of a single piece by Irish electronic musician/visual artist Dennis McNulty, who has long been a presence on the Dublin scene. These recordings were made at two different locations in São Paulo, Brazil during the 2004 Biennale the first inside a parabolic concrete swimming pool, the second under a large concrete roof structure. The piece itself is an improvisation using pre recorded shards of an a cappella version of The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds song “That’s Not Me”. And while you’d probably guess this cassette was recorded in some echoey place, The Beach Boys connection is not as sonically obvious as you’d imagine. Listen hard and you might be struck by how familiar certain passages sound, but there is so much warped blanketing atop the music, you’d almost surely credit any flash of recognition to faulty brain wiring. Of course, once you do know, you can hear it, and the effect is beautifully jarring. Great dang piece!

@beatupface announce What’s So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding?: A Collision of Noise, Rhythm, and Space on @_dietofworms_

DOW011
Available May 1st on Cassette & Digital

The Drogheda/Dublin-based experimental group formerly known as Spit emerge with their first full-length release as Beat Up Face: What’s So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding? - a bold excursion into sound and texture that blurs the lines between structure and chaos.

Built on freeform percussion, hypnotic atonal guitar, distorted keyboards, and sheets of atmospheric noise, the album channels the restless spirit of downtown New York’s late-1970s No Wave scene - its relentless pursuit of non-rock. It nods to the experimental legacies of Sonic Youth, Faust, Tony Conrad, and Ellen Fullman, with flashes of Sun City Girls’ warped psychedelia. Echoes of free improvisation and avant-garde jazz surface throughout, yet Beat Up Face never settle into any single genre - instead carving out a terrain where rhythm fractures, fugitive melodies emerge, and noise becomes its own language.

Intentionally unstable yet vividly alive, the album rejects perfection in favour of tension, collision, and unpredictability. It moves with dynamic energy, carrying the listener through shifting sonic landscapes where improvisation and structured chaos coexist seamlessly.

What’s So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding? is at once abrasive and hypnotic, demanding and rewarding. For those willing to step outside the predictable, Beat Up Face offer an intense, immersive experience - a debut that is uncompromising, visceral, and defiantly alive.

Massive thanks to @thequietus for including The Sky Was A Mouth Again at No.4 in their top 100 tQ’s Reissues Etc. of the Year 2025 (In Association with Norman Records)

These are our favourite reissues, compilations, live albums, mixes, OSTs and etceteras of the last 12 months, as voted for by tQ staff, columnists and core writers.

‘I think it’s important to see this chart as a place to join the dots with the main albums list, finding the currents that began many years ago and working out where they’ve led today. You arguably can see this most clearly in the top 10 presence of The Sky Was A Mouth Again, a charity album for Palestine that has a bunch of contemporary artists reinterpreting 1956 rock & roll standard ‘Louie Louie’, or the incredible Teppana Jänis, which sees a number of century old wax cylinder recordings of Finnish music played on traditional instruments, restored and augmented by contemporary folk musician Taito Hoffrén, revealing the past and present.’

‘Any old spod can call up a few musician mates and whack out a compilation album for a cause. These are generally no doubt well-intentioned rather than cynically performative, but sadly are often artistically nondescript and ephemeral. The Sky Was A Mouth Again is something different, however. Curated by Irish label Diet Of Worms as a fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians and United Nations Relief And Works Agency, The Sky Was A Mouth Again has a thrillingly diverse collection of interpretations of ‘Louie Louie’, from wooziling droning (Maarja Nut), spoken word (Guests), beguiling microfunk (Richard Dawson).’ taken in Dublin, Ireland by @_dietofworms_
