// Our understanding of art must be expanded, reviewed, and reweighted. Creativity thrives beyond the caging paradigms that have been imposed, consciously but also subliminally. For starters, it would be judicicious to reposition art - or any form of free, pointless, artistic forms of expression - as one of the most fantastic inward-looking and healing practices we have as a species. by @_dotmo

// Historically, there doesn't seem to be a direct correlation between the value - or the purpose- of art and other traditional hallmarks of "profitability" like say technical skills or beauty as a marketed construct. Perhaps this shows that the identity of an artist - or the glorified circles the artist is a part of - really can have a crucial role in defining the way a work of art is perceived by viewers (and then valued by speculators). This is an unfortunate and arguably societal bound development.

Another issue is how aesthetic properties became central in defining the vast and paramount expression of art; as a medium but mostly as a beautiful externalization of self (mind you, from infancy, one of the purest and most important periods of human creativity). by @_dotmo

// “In the dark I rest, unready for the light which dawns day after day, eager to be shared. Black silk, shelter me. I need more of the night before I open eyes and heart to illumination. I must still grow in the dark like a root not ready, not ready at all. {D. Levertov} by @_dotmo

2 of 3 // At the risk of coming across as a pretentious heretic, it seems to me like the great Plato's take on this matter (see previous caption) is limiting & limited at best, at least from a contemporary stand point. Such a line of thought - anchored in the argument that a child is unable to tell what is "fictional" from what is "true" - begs the question of whether innocence and gullibility are synonymous or even distinct. Let's quickly draw that important distinction: think of inherently unbound imagination or innate deep interconnections with nature or/and the spiritual world versus Santa, the Easter Bunny, God, a successful career, or the Tooth Fairy. Within the context of fiction or reality, a gullible person would not be perceived as youthful and innocent. Instead, they are perceived as less intelligent and easily duped. by @_dotmo

1 of 3 // Throughout society and as far back as antiquity, the argument has been made that a child’s innocence, or a childlike innocence, is something to protect and cherish. In keeping with this, this innocence has the capacity to be ruined or otherwise fractured. Plato argued in his Republic concerning the frailty of a child’s mind: "For a young person cannot judge what is allegorical and what is literal; anything that he receives into his mind at that age is likely to become indelible and unalterable; and therefore it is most important that the tales which the young first hear should be models of virtuous thoughts". by @_dotmo

// The animal-plant symbiosis of coral and algae is a delicate dance of survival, each relying on the other for food, waste removal, and the construction of their protective cribs. It is a multispecies partnership that illustrates how life on our planet flourishes through mutual support and intertwined destinies.

Coral bleaching is a stark visual metaphor for this breakdown in the relationship, an indicator of how the Anthropocene—this human epoch—is reshaping our planet. As the seas warm even slightly, the once vibrant coral communities are left pale and lifeless, a reminder of the fragility of the life systems that sustain us all. The perils faced beneath the waves are not isolated events; they signal a broader ecological crisis that impacts the life on the surface, including our own. {Dotmo x Cousteau} by @_dotmo

// Nothing could have prepared your heart to open like this / From beyond the skies and the stars / This echo arrived inside you / And started to pulse with life / Each beat a tiny act of growth / Traversing all our ancient shapes / On its way home to itself / Once it began, you were no longer your own / A new, more courageous you, offering itself / In a new way to a presence you can sense / But you have not seen or known.

It has made you feel alone
In a way you never knew before;
Everyone else sees only from the outside
What you feel and feed
With every fibre of your being.

Never have you travelled further inward
Where words and thoughts become half-light
Unable to reach the fund of brightness,
Strengthening inside the night of your womb.

Like some primeval moon,
Your soul brightens
The tides of essence
That flow to your child.

You know your life has changed forever,
For in all the days and years to come,
Distance will never be able to cut you off
From the one you now carry
For nine months under your heart.

May you be blessed with quiet confidence
That destiny will guide you and mind you.
May the emerging spirit of your child
Imbibe encouragement and joy
From the continuous music of your heart,
So that it can grow with ease.
Expectant of wonder and welcome
When its form is fully filled.

And it makes its journey out
To see you and settle at last
Relieved, and glad in your arms.

// Colonialism is defined as “control by one power over a dependent area or people.” It occurs when one nation subjugates another, conquering its population and exploiting it, often while forcing its own language and cultural values upon its people.

Important to note that "cultural" entails anything from the imposition of values and religious beliefs to the forced adoption of specific technologies, gastronomic habbits, and consumer behavior.

By 1914, a large majority of the world's nations had been colonized by Europeans at some point. Japan, Korea, and Thailand are the only other nations never to have been colonized by Europeans.

The concept of colonialism is closely linked to that of imperialism, which is the policy or ethos of using power and influence to control another nation or people, that underlies colonialism. The foreign policy strategies implimented by the U.S. and the UK since WW2 come to mind.... by @_dotmo

// In theoretical ecology, individuals within the different species studied in a network are all often - if not always - considered to be identical. However, individuals - whether it be a fish, a bee, or a human - change.

Recent findings [by André de Roos] show that by separating juveniles and adults in a system, and by considering that juveniles usually suffer the most from predation, you can see "that reaching adulthood is the biggest bottleneck in an individual’s life history".

Once you model a community with this consideration, the diverse and complex community is stable. "Without those life-stage-dependent interactions, the community is predicted to be unstable."

In the end, it’s not just the network structure that has complexity, but what's within population structure. by @_dotmo
