Been getting back into experimenting and playing around in my sketchbook since finishing school.
Pen, ink, pencil, collage, negatives from an old project, embroidery thread, etc.

Building a Sense of Self
My last project completed at SAIC as an undergraduate student.
For my last letterpress project I revisited my on-going exploration of the relationship between crochet fiber work and letterpress printing. For my last project, I pressure-printed with pieces of crochet. For this project I knew that I wanted to be more precise. I decided to crochet and scan a typeface. I reduced their size and exposed photo-polymer plates for every letter I needed and more. When printed, the blocks create meaningful negative space on the page as well as within themselves. The squares inform my concept of building blocks that emphasize both positive and negative space, celebrating both what I do and don’t know about myself.
My time at SAIC and in Chicago have been essential in discovering who I am. I knew I wanted my last letterpress project to reflect this. When it came time to write, I realized that I am actually leaving with more questions than I came with, but more direction, and with my hands on better gripped on the steering wheel of my life. I’ve learned that anything substantial isn’t made of a single part. It’s small and meaningful deposits that add up overtime that build meaningful substance.

The poem reads:
Like a solid sequence of stitches
or a lockup linking pieces of lead
all things consequential
are a composite of components.
Their assembly akin to one another is an anchor
that grounds the gestalt of what I’ve gathered.
If they are tailored to be tall and towering
they risk a far fall from being faultless.
If they are mounded with too much modesty
reaching life’s rising peaks will be too rigorous of a responsibility.
These deliberations dictate my destiny
and the ways they work weightlessly weave together what makes me who I am.

The product is an edition of three artist books, a quilt, and documentation photographs taken by Jayie Chou. @likethe2letters @jay.eeeeeeeeee

ā€œIf You’re Dissecting it,
it’s Already Deadā€
Caxton Club Grant Winner
This letterpress artist book references how anxiety affects the physical body and how the urge to tear apart every detail of an event kills the natural feeling it provokes. This is similar to dissecting an animal to learn more about it, yes more information is gained, but the life force has left the animal and how it naturally exists can no longer be observed. While experiencing the book, the reader dissects the rat and explores the words that are pressed into each part of its body. The order is not obvious and may have to be dissected or decoded as well. The rat is dirty, and ugly, but also a peaceful mammal that lives alongside us in the city. The rat as a symbol for anxiety relies on us to survive, but to us, it’s a pest that we spend lots of time trying to shut out.

The poem reads:
Whenever I peel back the skin
And crack open the ribsĀ
There is no life inside the heart
I’ve withered my intuitionĀ
To soothe the brain inside my skull
Just look!
Just feel!
Swallow your pride
Trust your gut
Purge negativityĀ
Overthinking and over analyzing separates the body from the mind
