One of my dearest friends was recently telling me about what Japanese Hannya masks represent: a woman consumed by rage & sorrow so intense that she transforms into a demon.

I find this deeply relatable.

In recent years, as my female rage has reached a steady boil, I’ve come to appreciate weaponry disguised as jewelry, such as pendants that hide knives & rings with spikes that turn a fist into an arrow.

The past couple weeks, flooded with news of men violating women & slapping each other on the wrist, have only turned up the temperature within me.

I channeled my rage into a dagger imitating a brooch; the hilt topped with a teardrop, sharp as the blade, to represent the profound sorrow that rests beneath the anger.

Meant to be worn on a lapel, harmless as a button, but capable of inflicting damage if the need arises…

I began by drawing several designs in pencil then gluing the chosen one to a brass sheet & tediously cutting out the shape with a jeweler’s saw. But, feeling that the dagger was too flat and one-dimensional, I sawed a second hilt, adding a sharp point to overlap the blade, then soldered the second hilt onto the first one & sanded then polished them until they looked like one solid piece. by @_echotree_

This piece was inspired by a book I read earlier this year, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘎𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 by Nghi Vo, which centers around a female demon named Vitrine who watches over the city of Azril with a strange love for its inhabitants.

When three vengeful angels burn the city to the ground, Vitrine curses one of them, binding him like a ghost to the ruins, leading to a complex dance between two immortal beings as guilt & rage shift into something unexpected.

The ancient myth of Lilith has many faces.

In some, she is the first woman, an equal to the biblical Adam, who refuses to submit to him. Defiant, she utters god’s secret name & flees from the Garden of Eden.

In others, she is a thing to be feared, a winged demon who seduces men & devours children under the veil of night; her breasts filled not with milk but poison. Ancient amulets have been discovered that appear to feature incantations meant to protect against her dark magic.

I created this key chain for one of my dearest friends.

After years of enduring a corrosive living situation, he broke free & moved into his first solo apartment; a place where he could finally cultivate peace & safety.

As a housewarming gift & first piece of mail at the new address, I made this little pendant for his key ring—sawed from a sheet of brass, then polished & handstamped—so that every time he locked or unlocked the door he would know: I am home. by @_echotree_

“If sex sells everything, I call it a scam.
Profit off our bodies while they’re holding us back.
Every law they pass feels like a fucking attack.
Well, goddamn, I’m a woman gone mad.

Don’t like yourself, they got Ozempic for that.
Chasin’ perfection we get caught in their trap.
From their penthouse views they can’t see what I can.
I’m a woman, I’m a woman gone mad.

They’ll shake their heads
& say, well, she’s gone insane.
But, honey, look around
at everything that’s at stake.

Oh my, ain’t it sad.
Ain’t it sad, just a woman gone mad.
They build us up to watch us fall
& love to see us lose it all.
Oh my, I’ll be damned.
I’ll be damned if we ever go back.
Here comes a force they can’t ignore:
One woman gone mad but millions more.”

Many years ago, I dressed a friend like a flower, with a crown of blue petals & pollen painted on her cheeks, then buried her feet in my garden & photographed her with a Holga film camera as she stared at the sky with an envious longing to be untethered like the birds.

After I finished this quick watercolor painting I remembered those old photographs & was struck by the similarity; an idea echoing through time. I still find that longing so deeply relatable.

This little oil portrait of actress & author Lupita Nyong’o was inspired by the Jordan Peele film “Us” in which she plays two versions of the same character: one who was born in darkness but stole a chance at the light while the other was born in light but forced into darkness.

Perhaps a pair of golden scissors will help to even the playing field.

“As equals, we meet.
Time collapses.
Silently, you turn to me;
an outline, a silhouette,
eyes like nightshade.

Cleanse me, teach me
in your gentle resilience.
As time slows, stay close to me.
I am flying in my sleep.

It’s like lightning finds me
when you’re around.
Flashing curiously
past the borders of the frame.
Ink on the page,
eclipse me, reveal me,
eyes like nightshade.”

Though I’m rather fond of them, I’d never painted a beetle before. But I’m working on a larger painting that prominently features a beetle so I painted this little arthropod as practice. Still debating whether I should add something in the space between its bottom legs. A jewel? A drop of blood? An eyeball? A tooth?...

What do you think I should add? Or should I keep it as-is?

“I slip into the forest, barefoot & moon-eyed, inviting the nightbirds to nest in my bramble thicket hair. I lay down in the moss, & whisper incantations to midnight’s crescent grin. I collect the fallen fruit & feast until I’m soft as sin. I howl the name of every stolen sister to the aching sky. I dance with forbidden joy around the fire, daring any passing fool to just try & push me in.”
