Original Artwork Autographs Rare Archives
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
"Before the world discovered Dragon Ball, this bird (鳥) already existed."

Long before Goku became one of the world's most recognizable characters, Akira Toriyama was sketching a small bird that would later become the emblem of his official fan club—the Akira Toriyama Preservation Society

This is one of the original concept sketches.

Formally authenticated by Mandarake as a hand-drawn work by Akira Toriyama, it preserves a rare moment in the creative process—the moment before a logo became an identity.

The accompanying images show how this early concept evolved into the official emblem of the Akira Toriyama Preservation Society, appearing on membership cards, newsletters, publications, and merchandise throughout the 1980s.

For collectors, published artwork tells one story.

Original production material tells another.

It records not only what the world eventually saw—but also how the idea first took shape.

Original.
Authenticated.
Preserved.

It was really special to be in Houston to celebrate Masako Nozawa’s 90th birthday.

I also finally got to meet friends I’d known through Instagram for a long time, and we had a really fun two days together. During my time in Houston, I met four voice actors who have played Goku, including Masako Nozawa, as well as the voice actor of Beerus. I also completed a collection that means a lot to me.

I had a chance to talk briefly with Masako Nozawa and wish her a happy birthday in person. I also gave her a short handwritten letter, and she read it right there in front of me, haha. When I told her I had come from South Korea, she seemed surprised.

When I showed her an old Dragon Ball animation script I had brought with me, she looked at it and said, “I remember this.” That was a special moment for me.

I also showed her an original piece of artwork hand-drawn by Akira Toriyama around 40 years ago. She seemed surprised when she saw it.

As I said goodbye and turned to leave, I heard Masako Nozawa say behind me, “Sugoi desu ne” (すごいですね / “That’s amazing”). Those words stayed with me. I think she was probably referring to Toriyama-sensei’s original artwork I had just shown her.

It was only two days in Houston, but I came home with a lot of great memories.

Just like these moments captured on film, I hope the memories of those days stay with us for a long time.

To everyone who shared those days with me, thank you. taken in Reliant Center by @_eclipse_k

Between 1982 and 1983, Akira Toriyama created this original hand-drawn and colored sketch for the logo designs of the Toriyama Akira Hozonkai and BIRD STUDIO.

This time, I took a closer look at the original artwork under high magnification.

The moment a pencil touches paper, graphite is pushed and spread into the fibers—and those traces are still there. Where each line begins and ends, where strokes overlap, where more pressure was applied, and even the minute traces left by pen and coloring materials all look completely different from what we can see with the naked eye.

Following these tiny details, we can get a sense of how Toriyama formed each line and shape, and how an idea in his mind gradually developed into a design.

With just a few lines, an idea begins to take shape. Then color is added, and the design comes together. Looking this closely at those traces feels almost like watching Toriyama’s distinctive ideas and artistic sensibility take physical form on the paper.

The high magnification also revealed something that was almost impossible to see with the naked eye.

In several areas where the yellow and black meet, minute traces of red can be seen. It is an intriguing detail that suggests another pen or coloring material may have been used in addition to the colors previously visible to the naked eye.

At some moment between 1982 and 1983, Toriyama’s hand moved across this paper with pencil and pen, adding color and leaving these traces behind. That moment of creation has remained here like a time capsule, preserved on the paper for more than 40 years.

AKIRA TORIYAMA

Full recap of @tokyox.usa 😎

Off the jump, I want to say thank you to the homies @xenosgalla & @barbs_cels_animation for coming down and wanting to be a part of the show!

Getting to meet @godlycomics, @_eclipse_k, @highendhobby and so many others for the Masako Nozawa signing was incredible. Seeing original Toriyama drawings, unbelievable storyboards, manga, and even genga/douga getting signed was something else.

My personal experience with Masako is something I’ll cherish forever. During my signing, she recognized my Hajime No Ippo shirt, which sparked a small conversation—and somehow ended with me doing the Dempsey Roll in front of her 😂🥺 Definitely a moment none of us expected, but one we all enjoyed!

Finally meeting @nostalgicdza was something I’ve looked forward to for quite some time. He brought me straight back to my childhood with the opportunity to meet the VAs from Ed, Edd n Eddy, including @samuelvincentkhouth. Getting to do the main intro with them and share some timeless moments about cartoons, anime, and the impact they’ve had on all of us was awesome.

Last but not least, I was able to secure custom shikishi from Gen Sato & Hidetoshi Omori. Watching the artwork come to life right in front of me made it that much more special. Seeing the Gundam sketch take shape was incredible, and having Hidetoshi create a custom Hajime No Ippo shikishi for me on the spot is something I won’t forget.

The event itself was run beautifully by the entire staff. My good friend @ds_kinchi looked out for us every step of the way, and even Mr. Naoki-san himself made sure we were good and enjoying ourselves throughout the weekend. That was truly the cherry on top.

Amazing art, amazing people, and memories I’ll have for a lifetime.

Already looking forward to next year 🙌🏼 by @_eclipse_k

A New Year card sent by Akira Toriyama to a reader in 1986.
A surviving example from nearly 40 years ago.

This was an official reader prize from Weekly Shonen Jump’s 1986 New Year Issue No. 6. Each participating manga artist presented message cards to 100 readers, including Akira Toriyama for Dragon Ball.
The card shows Toriyama driving a car marked “1986.”

“Please keep supporting both the manga and the TV anime.
This year, I’m planning to enjoy lots of drives with my wife!!”
“But I have a pretty terrible sense of direction… I might accidentally end up going ‘Back to the Future.’”
“Excuse me… could you tell me the way back to Nagoya……?”
The joke is that Toriyama’s terrible sense of direction has taken him all the way to another era — a great example of his distinctive sense of humor.

During the Dr. Slump years, Toriyama actually owned and cherished an Autobianchi A112. His interest in cars and motorcycles can also be seen throughout his work and illustrations from the period.
The Autobianchi A112 from his Dr. Slump years, followed by another car and a story about driving in this 1986 card from the early years of Dragon Ball.

This is one of the surviving examples from the 100 cards originally presented to readers in 1986, nearly 40 years ago.
Hand-signed on the reverse:
“DRAGON BALL / 鳥山明 (Akira Toriyama)”

Authenticated by Mandarake.

DRAGON BALL — Episode 48
Original Production Script, 1987
On Air: January 28, 1987 / Fuji TV

1987 — the moment Dragon Ball Episode 48 was being created.
“General Blue’s Attack Begins!”
This is an original production script for Dragon Ball Episode 48, which aired on Fuji TV on January 28, 1987.
Before the episode was completed, the dialogue and scene directions for Goku, Bulma, Krillin, and General Blue already existed on these pages.
From Goku and the others searching for the Dragon Ball underwater, to General Blue’s submarine pursuing them, and finally the beginning of the torpedo attack, the script preserves the episode in its production-stage form.
That is what makes this piece so interesting to me: you can follow the episode page by page and see how familiar scenes were originally written before they reached the screen.

The cover itself is marked with:
No.48 clearly identifying the episode this script was prepared for.
