Yiddish electro puppet opera.

“Khazn Elektrik” is a concert of Khazones-inspired experimental music by Eli Berman featuring Judith Berkson. Following the concert is a kumsitz (khazones improvisation workshop) led by Judith Berkson — come ready to learn the art of traditional cantorial music!

Eli Berman will perform original music in Yiddish, Hebrew, and English. This will include her electronic dance music from the Kleztronica scene as well as solo excerpts from “Litanies of Lilith,” an electro puppet opera written, composed, and performed by Eli Berman with Yiddish translations by Moishe Dolman. Sounds are generated live on stage via voice and wearable electronics in additions to beats made entirely from vocal samples.

Before there is Eve, there is Lilith.

“Litanies of Lilith” depicts her transformation from the first wife of Adam into the primordial mother of demons. She is created from the same earth as Adam and refuses to lie beneath him. She cries the ineffable names of God in order to grow an owl-like head and wings, crossing the Sea of Reeds to flee from Eden. This story is based on a Hebrew/Aramaic fable written in the Alphabet of Ben Sira, a medieval text from ~1000 CE. The title also references Diamanda Galás’ piece for voice and electronics, “Litanies of Satan,” itself drawn from poet Charles Baudelaire.

The Lilith backpack puppet, about 8ft tall, is constructed from PVC pipes, plastic tubing, wood, fabric, and electronics. Lilith’s eyes are battery-powered instruments with embedded speakers. Built from resonant PVC pipes, microphones, transducers, goat skin, and delay pedals, each requires onstage amplification rather than direct connection to a venue sound system. Two microphones in Lilith's wings feed into battery-powered, Teensy delay pedals worn in Berman’s bra, allowing her to manipulate the sounds from Lilith's eyes in real time.

Congratulations team on the first screening of FIREBIRD - a gorgeous, funny, poignant, meaningful, folky and contemporary animated art-documentary short, for which we recorded the all-vocal score a year ago!

Led by Vlada Tomova, the vocal trio, featuring Annie Beliveau, Eli Berman and Vlada Tomova, sang a semi-improvised score based on Bulgarian, Ukrainian and Russian folk songs and propaganda music. We are so proud to be part of this production.

The screening was mostly meant for the artists to view the film for the first time. We look forward to opportunities to share it with audiences close and far!

LITANIES OF LILITH a Yiddish/English electro puppet opera by Eli Berman. Excerpts from the 2026 Object Movement Puppetry Festival at Dixon Place 4/24 & 4/25

LILITH kvetching in landscape mode 👹 “Kvetching” is the beloved American Yiddish slang word for “complaining,” but the original meaning of the Yiddish word is “stretching”…and when you are giving birth, the word for “push!” is “kvetch zikh!” … “stretch yourself!” … may we all stretch and kvetch onward!

Thank you so much for coming to Lilith land and trancing out with our demons!!! We can’t wait for your next visit…Lilith’s eyes are speakers. Her head is made of a giant goat hide (courtesy of @keurdjembe) stretched over pvc, resonating with acoustic feedback from transducers in her pupils and microphones in her wing bones. Also her DELAY PEDAL BOOBS. All sounds come from Lilith’s wearable noise instrument, the performers’ voices, and The Sea of Reeds drums, which are made of goat hides stretched over cardboard fabric reams as well as salmon leather (courtesy of @_wyntro_ ) stretched over brass pipes. Decorated with palm leaves from my Palm Sunday church service at St Mary the Virgin in Times Square.

Join us this Friday and Saturday for the second weekend and  final performances of the annual CWP Object Movement Puppetry Festival!

This weekend’s lineup of puppetry includes “Litanies of Lilith” by @_eliberman_ . A classically trained countertenor and baritone, Eli’s music fuses extended vocal techniques and experimental electronics with Ashkenazi cantorial prayer, Yiddish and Appalachian ballads, and choral traditions.

“Litanies of Lilith” is a puppet opera exploring the Jewish mythology of Lilith, mother of demons. Singing in English and Yiddish, composer-vocalist Eli Berman unleashes her voice through noise instruments made of pipes, tubes, microphones, and speakers all assembled into a wearable backpack puppet and props. This show will be featured for three performances only, be sure to reserve your tickets now!

1 singer. 3 noise instruments. 5 puppeteers. 20 minutes. Countless demon babies…April 24 (7pm) & April 25 (2pm / 7pm) at @dixonplace for the 2026 Object Movement Festival with @centeratwestpark 🎭

LITANIES OF LILITH is a puppet opera exploring the Jewish mythology of Lilith, mother of demons. Singing in English and Yiddish, composer-vocalist Eli Berman unleashes her voice through her vocal feedback pipes: electronic instruments made of pipes, tubes, animal hides, microphones, speakers, and effects. These materials are assembled into musical props along with a wearable, sonic backpack puppet operated by multiple people. Libretto in English by Eli Berman with Yiddish translation by Moishe Dolman. Additional performers include Jan Leslie Harding, Zlata Godunova, Bonita Oliver, and Abbie Minard. Additional builders include Jim Freeman, Jan Leslie Harding, and Zlata Godunova. @zlata_god @frenchleave62317 @abbiefrommars

The CWP Object Movement Puppetry Festival is the culmination of The Center at West Park’s annual residency program in which a cohort of eight puppetry and object theater artists meet and work over the course of seven months to develop new short works. This residency culminates in the Object Movement Puppetry Festival, a two week celebration of puppetry and object theater with a unique lineup of original works each weekend.

The first weekend of 2026’s 9th annual festival features new work created by Daniel Toretsky, Eve Soffer Liberman, Zlata Godunova, and Joshua Holden.

The following weekend features work by Michael Vandergard, Eli Berman, Jan Leslie Harding, and Diane Matyas. taken in Dixon Place by @_eliberman_
