Mama Mary, where do I begin?

I knew this day would eventually come but wow- you really left this world the way you wanted to. Quick. Painless. Sudden.

This will be the first time I will come home without your warm embrace; holding me tight to reassure me that everything will be alright. I am on my way, Mama. It will be the hardest almost 24 hours flight but I will be there soonest!

The love of my life.

I asked you to write these Italian words and you gave me several drafts because you want my tattoo to look good. It looks amazing and I am so happy we did this project together.

You are the love of my life. I knew love because you lived and showed us how

I was a very energetic kid and sorry for almost giving you a heart attack! My fave memories is going to grocery together, doing chores and basically just living mundane tasks together. I guess that’s why my love language is quality time.

My sisters and I are privileged to have grown under your care. You have shown us that we can do anything and we have such good confidence because you believed in us.

I don’t think anybody will argue- I am your favourite granddaughter. I love making you smile. Laugh. Learning with you. Growing older with you. Making you proud.

I have told you again recently how I find everything feels pointless. I may be doing good & important work yet I am so far from you. I didn’t even get to say goodbye nor hold your hand

I have been told that I give good hugs. I am glad that I got to give you all the hugs, kisses and warmth when we used to live together.

We also have our LDR hugs and I though it looks weird, I may be hugging myself a lot with my arms across my chest to calm myself down because I need to find whatever strength you planted in me to go through this loss.

I’m glad we took a lot of pictures. This was a random morning a few years ago and you woke me up.

Every 7PM onwards in Toronto will be very hard for me now since I will not be getting any good morning messages and emoji from you.

You always tell me to take good care of myself. I’m really trying Mama but since you raised us with good work ethic, I will always be a tired girlie. Guess who showed that way of li by @_elittlebitofeverything

A DECADE OF SAYING YES

Ten years ago, in the Philippines, I sat for my very first management interview. The last person who interviewed me and gave me the chance to lead a training team was Madame Robina Gokongwei-Pe. I was 23, in Corporate Human Resources, and I thought I had my whole career mapped out.

A decade later, across the Pacific and in a completely different field, I’m leading a shelter team at @embrave.ca — the only emergency crisis shelter for Gender-based Violence in the Region of Peel in Ontario, Canada.

This Labour Day, I want to honour my colleagues across the gender-based violence shelter sector. GBV Shelter work is skilled, specialized work carried out by a women-majority workforce facing funding precarity and burnout. As @esva_canada puts it in their Stronger Workers, Stronger Survivors strategy: supporting survivors means supporting the workers. Secure wages. Sustainable, long-term funding.

I’ve been shaped by remarkable women leaders — the one who opened my first door a decade ago, and the ones I get to work beside every day. Grateful, too, that the Honourable @rechie.valdez , Minister of Women and Gender Equality — who is Filipino-Canadian — visited and saw this work firsthand at Embrave North.

Maraming salamat, Embrave North team!

It has been such a privilege to serve as your Program Manager, and I’m excited for the next chapter of this meaningful work.

Today marks the last day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup—and getting to witness it while living in one of the host cities brought out a fútbol fan in me I never knew existed.

I can’t help but hold two things at once: the excitement over who lifts the trophy, and the awareness that major sports events intensify intimate partner violence. The pattern shows up globally—reports spike in the hours after a match, even once the champion has been crowned.

The emotions, the alcohol, the us-versus-them mentality—none of it is an excuse, and none of it is the survivor’s fault. But awareness is protection. So celebrate the results responsibly, and check in on someone you love who might not be safe tonight.

Speaking of awareness—shoutout to @topublichealth 💙 for the FIFA themed sexual health campaign and resources!

Two years ago today, I made one of the hardest choices of my life. Coincidentally, I also had a counseling session scheduled for today. The main theme of this session: guarding my heart without falling into the trap of becoming jaded—of becoming a version of myself I don’t like. Striking a balance so that my boundaries don’t become barriers.

The relationship you have with yourself sets the floor for every other relationship in your life, including your ability to show up for people. I’ve always believed we’re full beings; not a work version and an off-the-clock version, but one whole person carrying both. There’s no such thing as a 50-50 work-life balance. So managing your heart is really about protecting your mind. And in the work I do, that isn’t optional as I have to be a version of myself steady enough to lead a team and safe enough to support vulnerable people.

I’ve come to see that seeking support isn’t just a crisis response - it’s maintenance. The kind I wish more people felt safe enough to reach for, without shame and with real access to the resources to do it.

So if you’re healing right now from a relationship, an old version of yourself, or a life that didn’t go according to plan— you don’t need to do this alone. 💙 by @_elittlebitofeverything

33 💙

Grateful to complete this chapter and welcome another one in the place where I re-wrote my life trajectory.

To the women who have shown me to live life with beauty, strength, joy, excellence, intelligence, kindness, warmth and resilience- it’s nice to celebrate with you together and virtually (to my fam back home!). Hope to pass the torch well to the young women who now faces this world with multiple horrors; we got each other 💪🏽

PS it’s a birthday late post iykyk

Awareness into Action

Had an amazing time growing more awareness that can be turned into action (and re-learning Arnis!) at @alert_program
A.L.E.R.T. Awareness-based, Lifesaving, Empowerment and Resilience Training. This 3-hour introductory session facilitated by @coach_poy_de_lara and Senior Master JB Ramos @stykfyter @combat.science is culturally competent, trauma-informed and a fun & active way to be more empowered and resilient.

It’s a wonderful experience to reconnect both with ourselves and the community. Maraming salamat for the work that you folks do!
