Sightseeing around Rome. 🇮🇹 I was so nervous to travel solo but I didn’t come this far just to see it from outside a window. I met so many cool people from around the world and saw so many beautiful places that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Also one of the locals told me it was good luck if I drank from the fountain. I think it really rang true because I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. 🌍 These two legs were strong enough to carry me across the world and back after a knee surgery. So let this be a message to go travel even if alone and most definitely while you’re young and your body is able to! by @_erikaxx

Veni, vidi, vici 🏛️🇮🇹I came, I saw, I conquered. Rome wasn’t built in a day and I’m so glad I got to walk through the Colosseum and the Roman Forums to see it for myself. It was truly a breathtaking experience and one that everyone should do at least once in their life! I was blown away by the expansiveness of it all. It felt like every corner of this city had a story and there was plenty of history and ancient ruins for any solo traveler to explore. Hopefully one day I’ll get to return and experience it all again. by @_erikaxx

I’m still not over this beautiful trip to Italy to celebrate Dana & Jack. Waking up, drinking tea, journaling, spending all day with good company, being surrounded by the most beautiful architecture, history, and quiet romantic charm of the Tuscany town of Montepulciano were some of my favorite days. It truly felt like a movie where every corner unveiled the most breathtaking views and the best tasting food I’ve ever had. This getaway has created some of the most memorable moments I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. What did I take away from this trip? The art of slowing down, enjoying the sweetness that life has to offer, to stay curious, and that it’s always a good time to have a glass of wine and enjoy the company of close friends and new ones! 🍷🇮🇹🍝 by @_erikaxx

A little commotion for the dress because I sure did feel bonita getting all dressed up to celebrate the most beautiful bride and groom Dana & Jack. I’m so blessed to have such incredible friends and get to witness their love story unfold over the years. It was by far the most breathtaking wedding and sweetest happily ever after I ever did see. “ I come as one, but I stand as 10,000.” - Maya Angelou Yesterday I received a first generation stole that I will be wearing this May when I graduate from UCF. I will be the first person in my family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Let’s be clear, this degree is not for me. It is for those who came before me. I am the daughter of an immigrant and I have seen the obstacles and adversities my parents and grandparents have had to overcome. I know that I will not be walking that stage alone. With me, I carry the spirit of those who came before me and the only reason I am here. I am only able to achieve this milestone because of the sacrifices made by my family. This degree is for my grandparents Vovo Luisa and Papa Manuel from Cape Verde who moved to this country in hopes for a better life. This degree is for my father Francisco who has worked relentlessly in survival mode his entire life to provide for us and didn’t have the privileges that I grew up with. This degree is for my grandma Verna from a small village in Elim, Alaska and my papa Frank who always encouraged me and believed in me long before I knew what I wanted to do with my life. This degree is for my mother Patricia who brought me into this world and she too has had to overcome many trials and adversities.Having scored the highest score on the adverse childhood experiences assessment, it is a miracle that I am even in the room. Having seen my parents struggle to put a roof over our head and food on the table. Having seen my siblings drop out of high school. Having seen my little sister overcome a drug addiction. Having seen physical, verbal, and emotional abuse, drug addiction, alcoholism, mental illness, domestic violence, and incarceration run through our home, according to the statistical average of children who grew up like I did… I had a 5-10% chance of getting a Bachelor’s degree. This is a statistic and not a guarantee. But against all the odds that were stacked against me and my family… I will be walking across that stage in May. So let this be a reminder that you do not have to be a product of your environment. It is never too late to break the cycle and overcome it. by @_erikaxx
