/Things I Like: Nesso & Nessino/

A new entry in the “Things I Like” series, a little homage to @artemide_lighting iconic Nesso and Nessino lamps.
Designed by Giancarlo Mattioli and the Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova in 1967, the Nesso was a symbol of a new era: bold, playful, and unapologetically futuristic. The smaller Nessino followed shortly after, bringing that same organic shape into more intimate spaces.

As per the animation, I guess when you put a bunch of these gorgeous lamps together, it’s not difficult to imagine them floating like shinny creatures, pulsing through space, with a sense of quiet wonder.

/Things I Like: The Bubble Chair/

Some objects don’t just exist—they feel like they come from another world.

Eero Aarnio’s Bubble Chair (1968) is one of those. A floating sphere of acrylic and chrome, suspended in midair like a portal to a quiet, weightless dimension. It’s a piece of furniture, sure—but it’s also a capsule of isolation, a pocket of silence in a noisy world.

So I made a character made entirely of @aarniooriginals Bubble Chairs—hundreds of them, moving in sync, turning the weightlessness of the chair into rhythm, a pulsing being of suspended motion, caught somewhere between furniture, sculpture, and something weirder.

This 3D character is inspired by the modular design philosophy of @usmmodularfurniture —where every piece connects, reconfigures, and evolves. I wanted to translate that logic into something more organic, yet still structured.

/Things I Like: USM Modular Furniture/

@usmmodularfurniture has always stood out to me—not just for its aesthetics, but for its precision and adaptability. Its modular system strikes a careful balance between functionality, structure, and simplicity—principles that extend far beyond furniture.

This character was developed using a variety of well-documented Houdini techniques (including RBD, recursive subdivisions, and a bit of extra VEX here and there), but the real challenge was balancing them while keeping things mostly flexible. Finding that equilibrium made the process incredibly enjoyable.

While the idea was to reflect the clarity and versatility that define USM’s design philosophy, when you put 250+ procedurally animated modules together to form a character (using dynamics and constraints), things inevitably get messy. As an exercise in simplicity? Very unsuccessful. As a problem-creating/problem-solving challenge? Quite fun.

Here’s something I created a while ago for an NFT drop that failed spectacularly. Despite that, it remains one of the most exciting collaborative efforts I’ve ever been part of.

The animation is simple, but it relies heavily on the power of #Houdini and procedural workflows. The non-destructive and generative approach allowed me to create variations every Nth frame, introducing unexpected—and hopefully interesting—alterations to the basic animation.” by @_estebandiacono
