Nothing prepares you for the size of them from above.

From the boat you see a back and a blow in the distance. From two hundred metres up you finally see the whole animal, and then you truly see the sheer size that looks so small from a distance..

Mangroves hold more carbon per hectare than rainforest, and we are still clearing them for shrimp ponds.

They are also the nursery for most of what you see later out on the reef. Every juvenile fish in these frames will end up somewhere people pay to dive. Protecting the ugly shallow bit is what keeps the pretty deep bit alive.

Three reasons the journey to Raja Ampat is worth it.

It takes days to get there and that is most of the reason it still looks like this. Reef that has not been worked over, animals that do not leave when you approach, and water you get to yourself.

The light in a mangrove does something I have not seen anywhere else.

Shallow, still, tea-coloured water with roots breaking the surface, and the whole thing turns into a hall of mirrors. It is also why every small fish in there sits in the shade rather than out in the open.

Twenty minutes of waiting for about four seconds of this.

Mandarin fish rise off the rubble at dusk for a few minutes and that is the whole window. Miss it and you come back tomorrow. Swipe to the last frame for the closest I got.

Anyone else shooting dusk behaviour? I want to know what you wait for.

The mangroves of Raja Ampat still feel like the strangest place I have filmed.

Roots above, reef below, and about thirty centimetres of water in between where the light does something I have never seen anywhere else. Most people swim straight past these on the way to the dive site.

A giant of the ocean, surrounded by something that doesn’t belong.

This manta glides through a sea of plastic a reminder that our choices reach even the most remote waters.

One of those unreal days full of surprises!

Started with a whale and calf next to the boat after a dive, then a juvenile whale shark showed up on the other side, just under the boat!

A few hours later, an adult whale shark appeared right behind the boat while we were watching the mother and the calf for the second time that day!

Allow this in the same day, just incredible!
