Factory of ideas.

Datasets make the product; we make the datasets. All experiments connect to one another in an ecosystem curated by us. We call this, "Workflow": It is a framework for the algorithms and a guide for the designers. It's also where we have the most control within this creative Deep Learning design space. This new machine assisted format might come off unsettling to some. It is true that the responsibilities as a designer shift fron completing specific tasks to thinking and theorizing; iterating more. Details will come, and be perfected with time; but as designers we will never have less opportunities to create, than now. #mycelium #deeplearning #ai #architecture #aiarchitecture #archdaily #myceliumarchitecture by @_fabricka
Understanding limitations of any concept allows us to think beyond them. As architects, engineers, all round design enthusiasts, we owe it to ourselves to ground the work in meaningful, contextual evidence. Facts are challenging, but they make up most compelling design. Three main parameters emerged: organizational, sturctural, and spatial; each representing a key design element. Experiments in this project come in two-fold. Natural and Artificial. The natural world informs us, creating the parameters for digital world. While it is restrictive, this method allows us to stay relevant to the reality of the material. The digital experiments you see above, allow us to analyze many complex concepts, and relate them to one another spatially. "we formulated a sequential connection strategy of training multiple deep neural networks with mycelium datasets to encode mycolic activity into 2D and later 3D architectural explorations." The conditions in which we choose to build matters. Building might not always be the answer but it sure is worth pursuing the question. While climactic conditions pushed us to the Ecuador region of the globe, Casablanca’s rich identity was the deciding factor. "The site selection was rationalized by its challenges as an informal settlement and its potential to employ mycelium as an affordable low-tech material for the proposed structure. The first goal of employing mycelium in this research was to understand its network system and growth behavior for DL training. The second objective was at the design conceptualization phase; the potential use of mycelium as an emergent structural material." We tend to simplify site research into just the physicial conditions of an area while we miss the people, the traditions, the music, the culture, the history... Any aspect of what makes the space a place. For this project, Ancienna Medina provided us with many points of inspiration. The project brief involved grounding this experimental approach in a city on the verge of a climate crisis. Ancienna Medina quarter in Casablanca, Morocco is classified as “infamous bidonville”, a “shantytown” (Beier, 2019). Site Analysis is much more than a data collection. It’s the most fact-based part of the design process. Whatever inspiration one might have, the environment will always have definitive impact- or it should. We use site analysis helps us create boundaries within our own narratives. They become the parameters which influence our decisions throughout. By staying true to those boundaries we can develop a place. Our process includes adaptation of this data into multiple dimensions within the project. Planarly, sectionally, spatially... Mycelium presents a peculiar opportunity in architecture. You probably came across this fungi in other design fields like fashion and furniture. In architecture, there is already pioneering research on mycelium by Block Research Group (@blockresearchgroup), Fungal Arhcitectures (@citacph), Blast Studio (@blast.studio), Arup (@arupgroup) and The Living and countless others... Our hope, is to contribute to this exciting conversation through the perspective of AI. #CaseStudyPublication #AIAssistedDesign #BottomUpDesignProcess #DesignersInvestigateNuance #DesignPossibilitiesExplored #PrototypicalProject #CreativeAIExploration #DesignWorkflowRevealed #OneYearInMaking #PublicationCelebration #CAADRIA2023 #DesignSpaceExploration #PhysicalExperimentation by @_fabricka
This project was possible thanks to our third partner in crime, Matt Craven; working with us the whole semester, growing and developping our ideas, as well as our mushrooms. We miss you Craven:) We’d like to thank our supportive professor, Dr. Shermeen Yousif (@shermeenyousif), for believing in our ideas and always shining light on the path forward in this process. Another special thank you is due to Professor Daniel Bolojan @nonstandardstudio for granting us unlimited access to his technical libraries, and sharing with us his experience every step of the way. #CaseStudyPublication #AIAssistedDesign #BottomUpDesignProcess #DesignersInvestigateNuance #DesignPossibilitiesExplored #PrototypicalProject #CreativeAIExploration #DesignWorkflowRevealed #OneYearInMaking #PublicationCelebration #CAADRIA2023 #DesignSpaceExploration #PhysicalExperimentation by @_fabricka
Introducing: MyCOhabitat. A group effort which produced a thesis project, compelling research, and now officially the case study in a full publication. One fulL year after its debut, we're excited to finally be able to share the body of work and an inside look on this project in a more open fashion. MyCoHabitat is a prototypical project for a bottom-up, AI-assisted design process. As designers, we feel compelled to take on this nuance and investigate the possibilities it grants us. Swipe to see a detailed diagram of this workflow. You can now find the published research paper on CUMINCAD, as part of CAADRIA 2023 (@caadria2023) publications, under the name "Incorporating Physical Experimentation Into Creative Dl-Driven Design Space Exploration". Luisa moved to the US for school in 2017 to pursue her studies in architecture. Yağmur moved to the states in July 2014, her sophomore year in high school with her family, for a better chance at education. by @_fabricka
PARTNERS IN CRIME One of our biggest intentions is to create exposure to topics that are not necessarily in the basic academic curriculum but might be inspiring to those who are looking to push the boundaries of their skillset as designers. by @_fabricka
FabriCKa Ethos To become a hub for learning and sharing, and hopefully, to create a community where anybody can be the master or the student. by @_fabricka
