🦥🌿 Sloths are more than just sleepy tree-dwellers…they’re walking ecosystems!

A sloth’s fur is home to a miniature world of algae, fungi, moths, beetles, and mites. In fact, a single sloth can support over 100 species of insects, while the algae growing on its fur helps camouflage it among the rainforest canopy.

It’s a remarkable example of how one animal can provide a home for an entire community of life, and a reminder that every species plays a role in keeping nature connected. I guess they do more than sleep 24/7 🤭

Researchers at Barcelona Zoo discovered that giraffes can distinguish between different quantities and consistently choose the larger amount of food, a cognitive skill known as numerical discrimination.

Scientists believe these math skills help wild giraffes find the best feeding areas, avoid predators, and manage their social groups.

However, while the giraffes succeeded at basic addition-like tasks, they could not perform more complex subtraction-like tasks.

🪷✨ Celebrating Dragonfly Week with my submission to the British Dragonfly Society Art Competition.

Dragonflies have existed for over 300 million years, making them some of the oldest insects on Earth. Their remarkable agility and vibrant colours make them a fascinating symbol of resilience, transformation, and the beauty of freshwater ecosystems.

This piece is a celebration of these incredible insects and all the roles they play in nature.

🐦☀️ When the ocean warms, seabirds pay the price.

El Niño warms surface waters, reducing the upwelling of nutrient-rich water that supports fish populations. With less food available, seabirds must travel farther to feed, and many struggle to raise their chicks or survive.

As the current El Niño influences ocean conditions, scientists are closely monitoring seabird populations, such as seagulls, warning that prolonged warming could lead to widespread breeding failures and increased mortality.

🐋 Sperm whales are rewriting their language

A recent 20-year study in the Mediterranean Sea found that sperm whales in the eastern Mediterranean have developed a faster version of their signature click pattern, known as a coda.

Remarkably, they still use the original pattern at times, suggesting these vocal traditions are learned, shared, and passed between generations.

These findings offer rare insight into how animal cultures and dialects can evolve over time, proving that the ocean is full of stories we’re only beginning to understand.

👀❔🌊 Ocean of the Future

The ocean absorbs around 30% of our CO₂ emissions and over 90% of excess heat from climate change.

While this helps slow global warming, it comes at a cost: oceans are becoming more acidic, warmer, and losing oxygen, threatening coral reefs, marine ecosystems, and the species that depend on them.

The future is looking sour in more ways than one. I hope we can use science and humanity to bring together solutions.

As the final prompt for @forplanetocean @healthyoceancoalition challenge, I want to express my deepest gratitude for hosting such a wonderful initiative. Of course, it would not have been possible without the hosts ❤️ It was a pleasure taking part!

🌊🧴 Ocean Mysteries: Our Missing Plastic

Not all plastic stays afloat. Research suggests much of it is washed onto coastlines, where it’s buried beneath sand or repeatedly washed back into the sea.

Even more surprising, large plastic items can persist in the ocean for decades, with some dating back to the 1950s and 1960s.

Although there are several hypotheses, some are more plausible than others. Where do you believe all our plastic goes?

🦐🌊 Ocean Superheroes - Tiny but mighty!

Krill may be small, but they’re some of the ocean’s greatest superheroes.

These tiny crustaceans are the foundation of the marine food web, feeding whales, seals, penguins, fish, and seabirds. They also play a surprising role in fighting climate change by helping transport carbon from the ocean’s surface to the deep sea.

🌊🔥 The ocean is on fire!

The ocean absorbs over 90% of the excess heat**caused by climate change, but rising temperatures are pushing marine ecosystems to their limits.

Marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense, causing coral bleaching, disrupting marine food webs, and forcing species to migrate.

What happens beneath the waves affects us all. Healthy oceans help regulate our climate and produce around 50% of the oxygen we breathe.

Nature thrives on teamwork. Manta rays and remora fish share a fascinating symbiotic relationship that benefits both species.

Remoras eat harmful parasites, dead skin, and bacteria from the manta’s skin and gill.

Some manta rays can grow to over 7 metres wide, creating a mobile habitat for remoras and other marine life.

Today is the start of this wonderful illustration challenge that aims to raise more awareness about our oceans.

A single load of laundry can release hundreds of thousands of microfibers into wastewater. Globally, an estimated 500,000 tonnes of microfiber pollution enter the ocean each year, the equivalent of billions of plastic bottles.

Though nearly invisible, these tiny fibers can be ingested by marine life and contribute to the growing problem of ocean plastic pollution.
