Bat false faces I made and modeled over the years 🦇 Who else is ready for Halloween season? @jymdavis

Most of these bats were made during my five U.S. National Park Artist-In-Residencies. The first slide, for instance, was inspired by the endangered Townsend Big-Eared Bats at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona📍A couple others were made a Lassen Volcanic National Park (North California) and Craters of the Moon (Idaho). The American west is big time bat country @lassennps @cratersofthemoon_nps @petrifiedforestnps @lavabedsnps @craterlakenps taken in Craters of The Moon by @_false_face

Remember this book? Famous Monsters Do It Yourself Monster Make-Up Handbook by legendary movie make-up artist Dick Smith. Smith (1922-2014) was the guy who did the award-winning make-up for movies like The Exorcist, Little Big Man, The Godfather, Taxi Driver and Ken Russell’s Altered States. Smith’s special edition illustrated magazine presented a 100-page step-by-step guide on how to get the look for some of cinema’s best-known movie monsters. Using a range of everyday objects—from crepe paper and breadcrumbs to ping pong balls—Smith shared some of his best-kept secrets of the trade. Alot of the models in this book are Dick Smith's 10 year old son David by @_false_face

Jean Benoît (1922–2010) was a Canadian-born French Surrealist artist known for his elaborate costumes, masks, sculptures, and provocative performances. He became closely associated with André Breton and the Surrealist movement in Paris. His best-known work, L’Exécution du testament du marquis de Sade (slides 5 - 10. I had censor the 10th slide), culminated in his branding the word “SADE” onto his chest. Benoît created an elaborate costume filled with masks, wings, symbols, and objects connected to the life and imprisonment of the Marquis de Sade. The performance was conceived as a kind of funeral ritual marking the anniversary of Sade’s death. As Breton read Sade’s final testament, Benoît gradually removed the layers of his costume (some layers represented in the slides). This transformation moved from an elaborate constructed persona toward his bare body. Although the photographs of Benoît in the costume are well documented, the original performance was intentionally not photographed by @_false_face

The tomb effigy of François de Sarrà (died 1363 AD) is a great example of a 'transi' tomb. It shows his body being eaten by frogs and worms 🐸 🪱A medieval transi (from the French transir, “to pass away”) is a tomb sculpture showing the deceased as a decomposing corpse, rather than as an idealized living person. They became particularly common in Europe during the 14th–16th centuries.

Several legends were told about this particular 'frog' tomb in La Sarraz, Switzerland. One legend stated that he died a violent death while hunting and fell into a lake. When he was found much later by his family he was covered with frogs and snakes which were then depicted on his tomb. Another explanation for the grotesque display is that he was portrayed like this by his vassals who wanted to be avenged for his tyranny. Another possibility is that (in the 'transi' tradition) the frogs and worms simply symbolize decay and returning to nature and the stories were made up after the tomb was completed. by @_false_face
