Le Manoir De Draguse

Best known as the screenwriter of the Belgian horror classic The Devil's Nightmare, Patrice Rhomm had a short but wild career on the French erotic film circuit directing and/or writing a string of bizarre exploitation films more or less geared to the hardcore crowd.

Draguse, which barely qualifies as hardcore and instead offers a wonderfully off-kilter blend of supernatural perversity and vintage looks at the Parisian erotic scene (plus a cast of familiar Jess Franco faces). Plagued by a "satanic dream," historian and skeptic David Léger (French sleaze vet Mathot) is repeatedly visited in his subconscious by a candle-wielding mystery woman (Swinn) who mixes smoky potions, scrawls occult symbols in the dead of night, and pleasures herself with a gigantic skeleton bone.

Set in an indeterminate future the film is presented in the form of a live TV documentary. The Vietnam and Asian wars are on the escalation and the youthful rebels who refuse drafting are given the choice of either serving long prison sentences or taking part in a 3-days endurance test in Punishment Park, California.

Watkins’ experimental, provocative, controversial and polemical cinema and his own forthright, abrasive personality have lead to a frustrating, if not entirely unsurprising, marginalisation of both the director and his work. Watkins’ pioneering ‘docudrama’ style – a bold and vivid collage of newsreel type footage, voice-over narration, roving hand-held camerawork, fourth-wall-breaking sequences and frequent use of amateur actors – has blurred the lines between fact and fiction in pseudo-documentary films that cast a critical eye over past, present and near-future political issues.

More influential than many might realise, elements of Watkins’ groundbreaking filmmaking technique have had a noticeable impact on televisual docudramas, the documentary form itself, big-screen ‘mockumentaries’, the Dogme 95 directors and the films of Peter Greenaway and Michael Winterbottom among many others.

Twelve-year-old Anaïs is fat. Her sister, fifteen-year-old Elena, is a beauty. While the girls are on vacation with their parents, Anaïs tags along as Elena explores the dreary seaside town. Elena meets Fernando, an Italian law student; he seduces her with promises of love, and the ever-watchful Anaïs bears witness to the corruption of her sister’s innocence. Fat Girl is not only a portrayal of female adolescent sexuality and the complicated bond between siblings but also a shocking assertion by the always controversial Catherine Breillat that violent oppression exists at the core of male-female relations.

This is not a film softened and made innocuous by timid studio executives after “test screenings.” There is a jolting surprise in discovering that this film has free will, and can end as it wants, and that its director can make her point, however brutally.

In a 1980 interview with Aldo Tassone, Bernardo Bertolucci famously recalled that working as Pier Paolo Pasolini’s assistant on his first film Accattone (1961) was like witnessing the birth of cinema. Although he had worked on screenplays and had taken on minor roles in front of the camera, the Bologna-born poet and novelist had no formal training in filmmaking.

“One of the qualities of Pasolini’s early films was his invention of a new language,” said Bertolucci. “Even when he became more technically proficient later in his career, he always retained the apparent stylistic roughness of his beginnings.” - BFI
