I go to the woods.

Not only to keep my mind sane.
But as an act of rebellion.

I refuse to be a part of the madness.
I choose peace.
And find resilience in the trees.

The other day I was planning to walk another stage of the Tunsbergleden trail. When I reached the starting point at Borre church, I wasn't feeling well, so I decided to spend my day in Borreparken instead.

I don't regret that.

The cultural heritage site of Borre was a major power center in Scandinavia during the Viking Age, and this collection of burial mounds is unique. Seven large mounds and one burial cairn are still clearly visible in the terrain today, along with 25 smaller mounds and cairns within the area. The burial mounds date from around 500–900 AD.

Investigations show that one mound was built per generation. In the 900s, new graves were laid in the existing ones. Snorre Sturlason claimed in Heimskringla that kings were buried at Borrehaugene, but it is uncertain who is actually buried here.

To walk among this unique piece of history, to have the time to take it all in, and to watch how the weather changed the scenery throughout the day — forever grateful for the opportunity to experience this 🙏
