Aspire

Aspire is a verb that means to have a strong desire, hope, or ambition to achieve, win, or become something important.

The spire of Chichester Cathedral stands 269 feet (82 meters) tall, making it the third-tallest English cathedral spire and the only medieval English cathedral spire visible from the sea. The original medieval spire collapsed in a famous structural failure on 21.02.1861, after years of visible cracks and weakened Norman-built support piers. It was rebuilt in 1866 using solid stone with iron reinforcements and stronger foundations.

The Cathedral allow the public to ascend 164 winding stone steps to explore previously closed roof spaces and take in panoramic views to the Isle of Wight and over the South Downs.

Bust of King Charles I

Replica bust of King Charles I, of an original by Hubert Le Sueur (1580-1658)

The original bronze of this bust is said to have been given to the City of Chichester at the Restoration by King Charles II in gratitude to those of its citizens who had been loyal to his father during the Civil War (1642-1651).

It was placed in a niche in the east face of the Market Cross where it remained until 1978 when, during removal of guano deposits, Le Sueur's signature was discovered on the socle. It was taken down for safe keeping and a fibreglass replica made to replace it. The original bust was sent to the Tate Gallery in London but has returned to Chichester and now resides in the Novium Museum.

Lush (formally Kimbell's Butchers Shop)

Note the marble slab window sill. This is a throwback to the shop's earlier use as Kimbell's butchers shop where the window slid up to display the food on sale.
