💬 Housing affects all of us. Let's talk about it together.

Join host Conor Russell for a conversation with advocate, lawyer and Massey Lecturer Leilani Farha (Housing Inc.), alongside acclaimed novelists Priya Guns (Hustle, Baby) and Jeff Miller (Temporary Palaces) as they imagine a different path forward — one rooted in law, humanity and imagination. From government policies that favour developers to a generation being priced out of their own cities, this panel digs into decades of decisions that got us here, and what it will actually take to get us out.

📍 Housing & Humanity Author Panel | September 20, 2:00–3:00 p.m.

🎟️ Tickets are on sale now, grab yours through the link in our bio!

Yesterday was the three-month anniversary of my novel Temporary Palaces hitting bookstore shelves! Thanks so much to everyone who has bought the book, requested or got it out of the library, came to one of my events, told a friend about it, talked to me about it, or wrote me a nice message! You all really turned up and I'm so grateful for the love.

And thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts who funded my Microgrant application supporting my tour and promotional activities around the book! Living in Nova Scotia, where provincial Conservatives have slashed arts funding, the vital work of the Canada Council is more important than ever and I'm grateful for the support!

To celebrate here are a few more out-takes from tour :)

1 Dog model redux
2 Penny caught reading in her backyard oasis
3 Spike reunited with the carpet of trilliums on Mount Royal
4 Ottawa boyz Michael and Samir
5 Suburban blossoms
6 Visited the Peterborough lift lock before my reading at Take Cover books
7 Maxx took me to the arboretum even though she's not really into flowers
8 My mom found all her old hats in the attic
9 Finally met Rachael's wolf Annie!
10 BFF Rori guided me around Toronto to sign books in the city's many wonderful stores. We visited Will's tree in Trinity Bellwoods after our stop at Type Books
11 "An artist prepares," napping in Ken and Niki's hammock before my event at Flying Books
12 Belle and Sebastian at Massey Hall were everything!

It's been a month and a bit since Temporary Palaces was released and I've been completely blown away by the response! A huge thanks to everyone who grabbed a copy, attended a book launch, got in touch, wrote about it, and hosted me on my travels! The warm response has been very touching :) The book is now well and truly launched, on its way out into the world to find new readers. ❤️

1) Me and Lee Arden tabling at the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair
2-4) Montreal at De Stiil Bookstore with Sean Michaels who surprised me with an introduction recalling the origins of the book in our old writers group
5-6) Ottawa at Spark Beer with Jennifer Whiteford (Thank you Octopus Books!)
7-8) Peterborough at Take Cover Books where Devon Code also read and thoughtfully interviewed me
9-10) Toronto at Flying Books with co-readers Emma Healey and Niko Stratis sitting in the second row
11-12) Visited my publisher House of Anansi Press and grinned with my editor Doug Richmond
13) At the University of Winnipeg's inaugural CanLit, Writing, Publishing and Pedagogy Conference I appeared on two panels. One about zines and pedagogy with Seyward Goodhand, Nyala Ali, Jonathan Dyck, organized by Anna Leventhal
14) . . . and one about writing outside your initial genre with Danila Botha, Martha Batiz, organized by Leesa Dean. Thanks to Celiese Lypka and Lindsay Wong for putting together a remarkable conference!
15) In Winnipeg I read at Sheldon Birnie's reading series Wild and Wonderful Words, on a beautiful patio with a bunch of other visiting writers
16) In Charlottetown I shared the stage with Katie Mac, wrapping up the tour at Bookmark PEI
17) Travelling companions on the ferry heading home ❤️ by @_ghostpine

one of the most crucial aspects of being immersed in DIY subcultures when you're young is, it can inspire you to try anything and motivate you to participate in and contribute to your local and broader community, how ever you can.

Jeff Miller / @_ghostpine and I never lived in the same towns but we seem to have experienced a lot of the same sorts of artistic expressions. this inspired him to write, and his debut novel for @houseofanansi "Temporary Palaces' celebrates underground culture and the kinds of figures who propel it, in a compelling, beautiful way.

sometimes you recall a pivotal show you saw when Bluetip played in the basement of 10 Ontario St. in Guelph, Ontario in 1996 and then you learn that someone in Ottawa saw them do something similar on that same tour.

such is the case during episode 1094 of the Kreative Kontrol Past Tense of ‘To Leave’ Has Already Left My Lips podcast, because Jeff Miller is here to discuss his captivating debut novel, ‘Temporary Palaces,’ living all over Canada and seeing an Edmonton Oilers hockey game in their championship heyday, our unexpected comedy connections, being inspired by bands like Shotmaker, Kepler, and Fugazi among others, hardcore punk rock lore and mythology, how Ottawa’s punk community inspired him to participate generally and start writing zines, what his novel is about and what exactly inspired it, pondering your subcultural youth in adulthood, upcoming live book events, other future plans, and much more.

it was a pleasure to catch up with Jeff and I hope you pick up a copy of his brilliant new novel, ‘Temporary Palaces,’ right now! you can also hear our discussion about it on my Kreative Kontrol podcast right now, but also later is fine. maybe after you finish reading his book? thanks!

Join us at Spark Beer on May 19th to celebrate the launch of @_ghostpine's debut novel, Temporary Palaces. Jeff will be joined in conversation by fellow author and Octopus alumnus @jenniferwhitefordwrites.

Please RSVP at octopusbooks.ca/miller as Spark has a limited seating capacity [link in bio].

Event starts at 7:30pm, arrive early to grab a table and enjoy a delicious pizza & beverage!

Pulsing with the raw energy of basement punk shows and DIY creativity, late-night manifestos and first heartbreaks, Temporary Palaces is a blazing debut that captures a generation caught between idealism and survival, art and activism, the dreams that define us and the compromises that save us.

"A plainspoken, punk-rock hymn … This is a book that will pick you up off the floor of a mosh pit and wrap you in its arms." —Sean Michaels

Jeff Miller is the author of the award-winning creative nonfiction collection Ghost Pine: All Stories True, based on his long-running zine of the same name. He grew up in Ottawa and now lives in rural Nova Scotia.
