The girl whose nickname is “sunshine,” always has a smile on her face, and has the most bubbly personality is the same girl who has fought countless silent battles, puts on a brave face around others, and shows up on days when she doesn’t want to. That girl is me. Mental illness has never been a stranger to me, but recently I felt it creeping a little closer than usual. It can feel scary and even like a dream most times. There’s no other way to describe the feeling besides haunting. Many people may not understand what it’s like to live every day with a mental illness, until they’ve experienced it for themselves. It can be hard to explain the things you feel and think, when most of the time you don’t even know why… it’s haunting. These extreme feelings and thoughts can always dig a deeper hole, finding it harder to get yourself out of. But I promise, it’s possible. I am sharing a piece of vulnerability because I wish I had someone who understood what my mind sounded like when I couldn’t make sense of it. Even though it can be hard to explain or speak about, I hope you know you have a place. You were given life for a reason and this world wouldn’t be the same if you were any different. Things may get tough, lonely, and disheartening, but there’s ALWAYS a light at the end of the tunnel. As long as you keep reaching for that light, you will be alright. To anyone who knows me personally and has had a glimpse into my life during this time, your support and love means more to me than I could ever put into words. For the people reading who may not know me or things I’ve been through, I hope that you know anything you’re going through or suffer with silently is more common than you think. Please never lose hope. You are never alone and surrounding yourself with the people who love you the most is the best medicine of them all.
