It’s the centennial of @sandiegomuseumofart and my work is alongside 9 others in the exhibition, Local Visions: Reimagining the Façade (up until end of July). My piece reimagines it as a living, breathing web of life representative of our ecosystems here, coastal and aquatic at the top, to mountains, to desert. The species are interconnected - the bat & hummingbird pollinate the agave, the agave provides food to them, etc. Working on it, I got caught up in an AI + Photoshop world, worried about messing up. The natural world is dirty, grisly, and beautiful—so why try to create a polished piece of art anyway? The orderliness of art deco (around when the museum was built) is juxtaposed with organic, messier wildlife…the spaces in between, where nature & civilization meet. Big honor to share my work in a museum for the first time & I think it’s important to share the things that make us feel alive in a system that continually dehumanizes. by @_hi_hilary
Nearly finished with this mural at Coffee Cycle’s new OB location (opening 9/7)! One of my favorite parts of murals is seeing how they evolve, in my mind, digitally, on the wall, & in the eyes of people who see them. Appreciate the creative freedom and trust, @coffeecycleroasting #sandiegomuralist #sandiegoartist #sandiegocoffeeshop #coffeeshopmural #cafemural #coffeeplant by @_hi_hilary
“We go through life. We shed our skins. We become ourselves.” -Patti Smith Recent drawing in a series of a rattlesnake shedding its skin made of cholla cactus skeletons. The flowers are from chollas and combined with the creosote bush. The original is sold but prints can be made of this, and most of my other art. Hope you’re good! ✌️🖤 #cactusart #cactusillustration #cactusdrawing #chollacactus #rattlesnakes #rattlesnakedrawing by @_hi_hilary
Nikko, Japan! In awe of these tree colors and water slides. Thank you @nikkojumbo #weee #sorrymom by @_hi_hilary
Happy to share this work and wish there wasn’t a need for it. Development plans for areas South of the Coronado bridge currently don’t protect and plan for tidal wetlands. @sandiegobirdalliance reached out about this postcard project & I’m honored to create art for it. The postcards allow you to share your thoughts & advocate for these areas and the critters that call them home. Latino Conservation Week is happening now with lots of cool events including a celebration 9/20. You can find these postcards there! Also - I’ll have a version available for prints with all proceeds supporting SDBA. 💌 Reach out if you’re interested! by @_hi_hilary
Two favorite things 💙 1/16 panels for a mural project with @_the.bureau_ @intuit #sandiegoartist #sandiegomuralist #officemural by @_hi_hilary
Over the last few weeks I’ve been working with @_the.bureau_ on a series of 4 murals for @intuit. Haven’t been great at documenting, mostly documenting my neighbor’s cat coming to visit, but this is my most extensive project to-date and I’d like to remember it. Enjoyed stepping out of my normal subject matter, reflecting on my relationship to technology, figuring out how to visualize the essential human touch in it, along with interconnectedness in its different forms, + abstract & logical thinking. #sandiegomuralist by @_hi_hilary
Assorted birds, art, a cat with no boundaries. Thankful to be sharing art in different styles & capacities. 3rd drawing is based off of photos & a video @bikingsuccs & @paisa_perdida shared from a ride. 🚲🪶 by @_hi_hilary
—NEW JERSEY DROP— We partnered with local artist @_hi_hilary to create this iconic jersey, and we’re excited to finally share it! The jersey brings Hilary’s love of the natural world to life, a fitting representation of the ride: 25 miles of bay, ocean, marshland, and fresh sea breeze. Now you can wear this tribute to San Diego’s favorite bike route! Shoutout to @theheavypedal for helping turn this into reality! Find the link in the linktree! by @_hi_hilary
Clothed in plants. Not the usual art I’ve been sharing lately cause most commissions aren’t cool with nudity but it’s been nice to get back to it. Hope you have a good day. Hope you can take a break from algorithms and screens to enjoy the natural world 🌱 by @_hi_hilary
