In conjunction with Hunt Gallery, Hawkins Headquarters is pleased to present ‘951 miles or 1530 kilometers’ at Hunt Gallery in Toronto. The opening reception is Saturday, July 18th, 6 – 8 PM and the exhibition will run through August 22, 2026.“In recent years, Hawkins Headquarters has focused a significant portion of its curatorial program on presenting Canadian artists to audiences in the American South. This exhibition reverses that trajectory, bringing artists from Atlanta and the broader Southeastern United States to Toronto and extending a dialogue that has developed between the two regions over the years.Extended conversations between the galleries have made visible a striking set of affinities. Despite the considerable geographic distance, artistic production in Atlanta and the Southeast often shares formal strategies, thematic concerns, and aesthetic sensibilities with work being made in Toronto—parallels that challenge assumptions about fixed regional or national artistic identities and that become clearest when the work is brought into direct dialogue.”Excited to see some old Toronto friends at the opening. Some writing from our current show. Full text in bio. …”The works in Unknownun are grounded in art history, but not through citation in the obvioussense. Oinonen does not quote the past in order to demonstrate that he knows it. Hemetabolizes it. The paintings carry the memory of older images and later painting problems:Rembrandt’s etched shadows, Pontormo’s elongated bodies, the charged atmospheres ofArkhip Kuindzhi, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Gustaf Fjaestad, and Charles Burchfield, the graphiccompression of Kazumasa Nagai, the bodily absurdity of Basil Wolverton, the postwarpainterly intelligence of Asger Jorn, Sadamasa Motonaga, Philip Guston, and Miyoko Ito,and the more recent image-world of Leiko Ikemura, Eberhard Havekost, Thomas Scheibitz,and David Hockney.This is not a list of influences. It is a historical field. Oinonen’s paintings sit inside a longargument about how an image becomes alive. In Rembrandt, a face can emerge fromdensity, shadow, and the smallest shifts of line. In Pontormo, the figure bends away fromnatural proportion and becomes emotional architecture. In Kuindzhi, Gallen-Kallela,Fjaestad, and Burchfield, landscape is never neutral. The paintings are charged: animated,spirited, psychological. Oinonen takes up that tradition of the world looking back. Hunt Gallery is presenting Alan Belcher’s ____.pdf at Basel Social Club, whose fifth edition takes place under the theme “Office” inside an office building near Basel SBB. A glazed ceramic multiple based on the Mac file icon, the work arrives at an art-fair moment when the preview PDF is becoming less automatic, and fairs are trying to recover some of the charge of seeing something in person for the first time. Belcher makes the PDF physical and impossible to open. by @_huntgallery_

Hunt Gallery is pleased to present Unknownun, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Anders Oinonen, opening June 5, 2026.Across more than two decades, Oinonen has developed a singular language of abstraction, figuration, landscape, and psychological portraiture. His paintings often appear first as arrangements of colour, and form, before resolving into faces, figures, or sentient landscapes. They look back, but not directly. As Gary Michael Dault wrote in The Globe and Mail, Oinonen’s paintings “develop the idea of the sentient landscape: You gaze at the paintings and the paintings gaze back at you.”For his exhibition Unknownun at Hunt Gallery, Oinonen presents a new body of work that continues his long investigation into facial geometry, emotional projection, the instability of looking and the gestural sensibilities of painting. In these paintings, forms hover between apparition and structure: eyes, noses, mouths, hills, masks, lips and shadows emerge through soft washes and luminous colour. The face is never simply a face. It is a place, a weather system, a monument, a joke, a wound, and sometimes a landscape under pressure.Anders Oinonen was born in 1977 in Kenora, Ontario. He received an MFA from the University of Waterloo and graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design. His solo and two-person exhibitions include Days at The Hole, New York; Family Practice and Phiz at Cooper Cole Gallery, Toronto; Eyebrow Haircut at The Hole, New York; People People at Cooper Cole Gallery, Toronto; and Sundogs at CTRL Gallery, Houston. His work has been included in exhibitions at Deitch Projects, New York; V1 Gallery, Copenhagen; Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; MOCCA, Toronto; The Hole, New York and Los Angeles; and other institutions and galleries internationally. His work is held in public collections including the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, St. Michael’s Hospital, and the Canada Council Art Bank.
