This 2016 trend has me emotional. I remember discovering YouTube in 2014 after graduating high school. I dreamed of attending FIT and becoming a model or fashion designer, but I didn’t have the resources to make it happen. School wasn’t my strong suit, but I knew YouTube was something I could do—before “content creator” was even a thing. At 19, while working retail, a stranger asked my Christmas wish while working during the holidays at a local small mall folks rarely shops at. I said a computer to edit videos. She came back an hour later with a brand-new one—truly an angel sent to help prepare me! From there, I started filming, editing, and teaching myself makeup. A whole new world opened up, and even though I didn’t know where it would lead, I knew it was mine. There were struggles—comparison, lack of hometown support, and “friendships” that hurt—but every lesson prepared me for where I am now. YouTube gave me confidence, storytelling skills, and the ability to show up fully for myself. Working retail for over 7 years built character, professionalism, and negotiation skills.
