Unveiling *Melancholy* ✨ the official cover art.

3 days till Aug 25. Let me share the story behind it.

My father “discouraged” me from making music. *You need a real job* (he’d say, pointing at my uncles actor for example)

But he always said I have beautiful hands. The ones you could call “pianist hands.”

That lives with me until today.

The water evokes two things in itself.

When I was very young, a music teacher made an unpleasant comment about my voice. It made me so self conscious that I didn’t want to sing in front of anyone anymore. No one except my best friend (hello @ suzanblt !).

That lasted 13 years.

Then I’m on a cruise in the Sunda Islands with that same best friend. The guide is playing guitar. Everybody sings.

And my best friend says, out loud: *”Amalia sings amazingly well.”*

The guide asked what song I wanted. But the ones I knew weren’t in his repertoire.

Everybody was cheering me on.

So I sang a capella…. in front of 20 persons (melted emoji)

My first biggest audience.

And to my surprise, everybody applauded, with my best friend tearing up.

That’s on these waters, that I finally realised maybe I could do it. Maybe I could sing.

As I travelled in Australia, I’ve always been surrounded by inspiring creatives people. I kept practising guitar and singing, even performed at some open mics. Today I live in Dunsborough, a 9 minutes walk from the ocean, and it is here that I have been working on this project…and where I’m releasing it.

I doubted a lot along the way.

Thinking what I was doing was too basic.

Too simple.

But I realized..

Simple is beautiful too. Just like this cover.

Still trying to find words for this one…

“Melancholy” is my first song ever released into the world, and somehow more than I thought showed up for it!
Through messages, comments, plays,… I sincerely didn’t expect so much!

Apparently “let’s play dress up” is all it takes to make me lose track of time 😂

Spent the afternoon at @boweys.official trying on pieces, mixing things I probably wouldn’t have put together myself, and basically becoming a different version of me with every outfit

I forgot how much fun it is to just play with clothes without taking any of it too seriously.

And somewhere between all the outfit changes and mirror selfies… I thought I’d leave you with a little reminder at the end

Still feels VERY strange saying “my first single” out loud 🥹

12 year old me used to watch cover after cover on YouTube, wishing she could do that too. But she thought she’d need someone to teach her guitar and that her voice wasn’t good enough. So she just... watched, instead of trying anything.

It took a while, and a realization that I’ll save for another post, to understand that maybe I was capable of it too.

So I picked up a guitar and started teaching myself a few years ago. No lessons, no structure or real consistency, just figuring it out alone. And each single time I think about posting something, I can’t help but compare myself to everyone online who’s clearly more skilled, more polished, more everything… and just like that hitting post just feels like jumping off a cliff.

But at the end of the day, we are all different people. With a different story, different life, different background than anyone else out there. Of course our craft is going to look different from someone else’s.

And most of all it’s just a cover, an exploration of my expression. Comparison really isn’t good for anything. What’s important is putting it out there and sticking to it.

And when we let it happen, here we are. Finally making covers, just like the ones we used to watch on YouTube all those years ago.

So if you’ve ever been scared of sharing the craft you love, this is your sign to do it anyway 🖤
