[Small guards]
who are truly skilled are some of the hardest players to defend—not because of their size, but because of how they use it. Their low center of gravity allows them to change directions instantly, making it difficult for defenders to stay in front. They’re usually quicker than bigger defenders, so one hesitation, crossover, or change of pace can create enough separation to attack. Great small guards also force defenders into impossible decisions. If you play too close, they’ll blow by you. If you give them space, they’ll pull up for a jumper. Once they get into the paint, they’re often elite finishers with floaters, crafty layups, or kick-out passes to open shooters. Their vision and basketball IQ let them read help defense before it happens, so every defensive mistake gets punished. In today’s game, it’s not about who is the biggest—it’s about who can control the pace, create angles, and make defenders react. That’s why an elite small point guard can completely take over a game despite giving up size to almost everyone on the court.
