“Decommissioned pool rescue pole with double loop shepherd’s crook”

Steel, hardware, 16’ x 1.5” x 10” 2026

I’ve been swimming and staring at this rescue pole for years, or better said, I finally SAW it a year ago, and it’s been gnawing at me and working on me, and now it’s ready for exhibition. The pool has charged my poetics and saved my body, but I see it living differently in public space: laying, leaning, as a flagpole, as a handrail, a poem, a protest sign, a warning, a promise… by @_jasonlazarus_

What does underseers mean?

Featured artist Jason Lazarus shares the story behind the title of their exhibition and how it reflects a different way of seeing the world. Through sculpture, object-based archives, and image-free photographic works, underseers invites us to slow down, question perception, and discover meaning beyond what’s immediately visible.

DREAMING ARTISTS!!! I’m applying for a 2027 Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts and rather than keep it secretive, I thought I’d ask for artists also applying, in the Fine Arts category specifically, who are interested in peer editing and resource sharing? I think I will share my application publicly when it’s finished whether I receive it or not, and I want to celebrate, share, and acknowledge @ssyjuco who still has their successful Guggenheim application online (it’s on her amazing, generous website). I haven’t applied since 2019, and one thing I’ve learned is that once you have a fresh application set, it is easier to apply for every year, which seems to be the long-term strategy for increasing your chances of securing the Fellowship. If you’re applying, I’m thinking of you and please feel free to DM about working together 🌈 by @_jasonlazarus_

It was a thrill to debut my growing essay/artist reading LISTENING FOR MONUMENTS at the Dunedin Arts Center, a culminating event of my solo exhibition ‘underseers.’ Here you can see me holding a used doorstop from the gallery itself! The essay traces over a year of collecting used doorstops from across the country, and proposes these objects as revelatory witnesses to bodies, violence, vision, and visibility. They are, to me, not only snapshot photography but a kind of center, a prism that can upend hierarchies and offer new poetics of vision. Thank you to the Dunedin Fine Art Center and curator Danny Olda for their collaboration and care.

Happy Eclipse Everyone !❤️💫👀

I’ve been researching and playing with the eclipse as a real world phenomenon and concept since 2017, it’s been one of my life’s thrills to make, alone and with the public, over the years and work w many institutions while doing so including @secristbeach, @orlandomuseumofart, @heiress.gallery, @artschoolusf, and lectures at dozens of orgs and classrooms. I’m still collecting used eclipse viewers as they are one of my life’s passions and believe they embody multitudes not just for today’s audiences but for generations to come!

Enjoy the magic we are all searching viewers 🌸💫💕 by @_jasonlazarus_

New work:
Brock String / Stereo Blind / Vision Training II (at rest)
Custom pastels, twine, nails
2026
*first 3 slides at rest, last 2 slides as wall drawing tool🤓

The Brock String, invented by Frederick W. Brock (1899–1972), treats stereo blindness (seeing in 3 dimensions), also known as steropsis. Critically, the Brock String–typically a 5-10 foot string with colored bead focal points at regular intervals–proved over time that ‘seeing in stereo’ could be achieved in adulthood. Here the Brock String is reimagined by the artist as a wall drawing tool and a pedagogy–the plastic beads replaced by custom sculpted pastel beads (in collaboration with Mount Vision Pastel Company, Tampa, FL). The artist posits each colored bead as a personal corrective vision prompt and offers workshops for the public to collaborate on forming their own corrective vision prompts.

“Untitled” 60×89 in, archival pigment print, 2010

Love Letters,
July 17 -October 3, 2026

University Galleries of Illinois State University
“Love Letters, an exhibition of works from University Galleries’ permanent collection, features six photographs and lithographs by Bethany Collins, Jason Lazarus, and Rafael Soldi.

“Jason Lazarus’s large-scale photograph Untitled (from the series 2004-Present) features a handwritten note in a thrifted Family of Man exhibition catalogue (published by the Museum of Modern Art). The affectionate message—neatly penned and clearly planned to fit within the confines of the gifted book’s opening page—encourages hopefulness, perspective, and peace for its recipient. Within this one photograph of a found object, Lazarus presents a collision of writing styles: the personal note from Leslie to Chris; Leslie’s quotations from poet and playwright William Shakespeare and author John Fowles; the dust jacket’s typed exhibition summary, written as a letter about “essential oneness” from curator Edward Steichen to all readers of the publication; and a reproduction of Steichen’s signature, seeming to personalize the note about his record-breaking but controversial photography exhibition. Traces of the book’s age and handling are evident in its yellowed edges, varied stains, frayed cover, adhered sticker, and Leslie’s postscript mention of cut-out pages.

Lazarus makes a photographic portrait of a book that documents a massive international photography exhibition. Rather than featuring the cover or the images within, he focuses on one person’s earnest statement about the exhibition’s impact and a desire to share it with someone else.”

Love Letters is curated by Kendra Paitz, director and chief curator. by @_jasonlazarus_

Camera Obscura / Active Shooter
Analog photogram (reproduced as archival inkjet print), MDF
84 x 34 x 1”
2026

A to-scale reproduction of a photography classroom door whose one small window is newly covered in defense of a potential active shooter. The window cover was removed to make this exposure; in the past the window has aided the artist’s teaching demonstrations of using available light, revealing a camera obscura, light temperature, etc.

This work is part of underseers—a solo exhibition by @_jasonlazarus_ , curated by @dannyolda, @dunedinfineartcenter through Aug 16, 2026.
