Alexandra Lund shares how her mother prepared her for a world that was not yet ready to be fair. Her mother faced men laughing at her career aspirations because she was a woman, and that rejection became the blueprint for everything she told her daughter.

From age eight onward, the message was the same: build your own road, do not build someone else's life.

Some people absorb the injustice done to them and spend their lives making sure it does not happen to the next person.

Never stop refining your actions and behavior.

President Tim Downs explains what losing a race in middle school taught him about life. Look at your actions, assess the outcome, then determine how to improve next time. One relay is all it took him to remember never to stop to look at the competition or you’ll lose the race.

The review is not the punishment. The review is the point.

He walked into his first management job ready to lead. Eileen, the veteran director of nursing, was not impressed.

Jon Riewer explains the lesson from his first management role that he has never been able to outgrow. He went in thinking he was there to take charge. What he discovered was that the people below him on the org chart were the ones who actually knew what was happening. He needed them far more than they needed him. Not as a philosophy he chose, but as a practical reality he had no choice but to accept.

"We still need all of them a lot more than they need me. And everybody knows it." Thirty years later, he says nothing about that has changed.

Being nice is not the same as being kind. And in most organizations, we're stuck at nice.

Nice is letting someone go through a light. Kind requires positive intent and truthfulness in the relationship. In the Midwest, we sometimes take three full conversations before someone will actually say what they think. That gap between what people are thinking and what they're willing to say limits how quickly anything can move.

Speed, trust, and real partnership all require kindness. Not niceness.

The day after the deal closed, a man in welding pants walked into Joe Raso's office.

A plant was about to be sold to a competitor who would have moved everything to Wisconsin. 150 jobs, 150 families. Joe got the governor's office on the phone, worked the remediation issue, and helped the local management team get their bid accepted. The next morning, a man in manufacturing clothes with burn holes in his shirt came to say thank you.

There's nothing better than to do the work and see it pay off at a very ground level for folks.
