Ahead of his latest exhibition, we spent the day with Jay Saya talking all things past, present and future. From heritage and homage to his transition from corporate photography to freelance life at @beam__studios in Footscray, we caught up with Jay as he prepared for Sidewalks Never Rest, which took place last weekend.

After spending so much time thinking about the photographs, the sequencing, the prints, the music, the sound design, the coffee, and all the details that went into Sidewalks Never Rest, what I wasn’t prepared for was what people gave back.

The conversations I had over the two days are what I’ll remember most. We spoke about our roots, our connection, our culture, and what it means to navigate identity through all of that.

People spoke about seeing their families in the photographs. About recognising familiar faces and familiar feelings. One guest joked to her friend, “hey look, there’s your uncle”, and it made me realise how deeply people were connecting with the work through their own memories and experiences.

One of the most special moments was watching a Vietnamese auntie and uncle spend time with the photographs. I later found out they were a friend’s parents. Seeing them carefully analyse the work reminded me that these images can hold different meanings for different generations. I hope they could see what I see — that beyond the complexities of history and memory, there is so much beauty in the place they once called home.

I’m also incredibly grateful to the peers who told me they felt inspired to pick up a camera again, the aspiring creatives who came for advice, and everyone who spent time sharing their own stories with me. Being part of Asian Heritage Week and creating something that resonated with our community is something I’ll carry with me for a long time.
