Jean (Tangata Tiriti, He/They) is someone who loves to embody the profound and whimsical, blurring the lines between such topics within his writing. He takes inspiration from any manner of thing: strange song titles, whatever brought him to tears most recently, or even the light reflecting from his pint glass.

Hailing from Ōtautahi —a city he believes has artistry woven into its bones— Jean has been writing poetry here for about three years now, having publicly shared more than 100 poems online over the last two. What possesses them to write is a mystery, but it’s evident that the sharing of his kupu is his way of extending a loving hand out to others, in hopes of them feeling seen, or even better, understood; it’s everyone’s first time breathing through their lungs. This poet is not someone you will see on stage at an open mic, but rather found on the dancefloor, shaking ass and having a mean kanikani.

What can I say? That these years may be the best of my life? That even the faintest remembrance of my life at this time will be met with warmth, and an ear to ear grin? Well all of that might be true, but I can think of something better. Recently, a thought occurred to me (I know, shocker), I thought that, when my death arrives, hopefully as an old man, that I might be graced with one more kanikani before I cross the threshold. I would like to be met at the door, by all of my haumis, exactly as they all look now, with their shimmering youth, or gentle wrinkles, wearing them proudly like new suits. I would like to be met with their smiles, their voices, their hugs too. I want to hear about how everyone’s lives turned out, the high & the lows, who they loved the most; Then I would like for us all to get together and have a real stomper, preferably outside, in the sun, maybe by an awa. Tears were plentiful when that thought entered my mind. Perhaps it is odd, to be pondering death on the precipice of my 24th birthday, but as I occasionally say in response to certain compliments: “It’s cos I have no hobbies”, which I guess is a lie. So here we are, e hoa mā, this is an ode to you. If you’ve danced by my side, called me queen, shared tea with me, blessed my ears with a kōrero about mahi, even planted a kiss upon these freckled cheeks, this is for you; May we all get to have one last dance with each other before we go, and we’ll be sure to make it worth it for those who weren’t so lucky. Perhaps I will in fact return? With a pot of tea in hand, and maybe a lustrous persimmon, so we can split it in two; Ah what the hell, I’ll bring some for everyone. Okay let’s get going doll. by @_jean_drag_

Caught up in the nature of nature, you already know tears were shorn from my sheepish eyes; this is what happens when I try to find you in the air around me. by @_jean_drag_

One day, when I have decided I’ve had enough, perhaps I might like to merge with the evening bugs, and join them in their dance, among the shafts of sunlight; Until that time arrives however, I must tell you, don’t be afraid to let yourself feel something, even if it’s a little silly (This is why some people don’t dance at the club). by @_jean_drag_

Kia Ora Koutou, I hope you’re well?

The @symbiosis.nz launch was utterly phenomenal!

Huge thank you to @leonardo.james_ for putting this whole project together, and to @sam.bambery for collaborating with him to make such an unforgettable evening.

I am hugely honoured and privileged to have been a part of this mahi, it means the world to me. Not to mention getting to inhabit the stage with some very talented individuals (@patellanz & @lily.kazakos ).
