Childrens Book Sunday

#grannysallyrecommends

Carys and I volunteered with a dog behaviourist for a couple of years. In that time we learned a lot about how to support Pippin; a lot about animal behaviour and an awful lot about human behaviour! One big contradiction became apparent. Many humans think they are the most intelligent, superior beings on the planet and dogs and other animals unintelligent in comparison. However, puppies are expected to arrive fully trained without any input from their humans! Although they cannot speak human, all animals including dogs and cats do communicate and we owe it to them to learn their language.

My family is full of animal lovers and the arrival of our beautiful grandaughter has started us thinking about how she will interact with the animals in our lives; how to keep them all safe and happy. Fortunately, I found these absolutely wonderful board books. Both guide children through rhymes and beautiful illustrations to understand the body language of animals - cats and puppies. Swipe for some photos. There are 2 pages at the back of each book with ‘golden rules’ about meeting dogs and puppies, cats and kittens. These lists are full of brilliant advice to inform encounters of the pet kind! The author, Dr Jess French is a vet, zoologist and author and I think that these books are really important.

I have heard some awful stories recently about dogs and young children being unsupervised. A dog bite is a devastating thing for any family to deal with and for a dog it can be a death sentence.

I am gathering together a little library for my grandchild (children) and will share some of the books which I add to it on my page. Any book which is added to the library will be awarded a #grannysallyrecommends award. These are the first books to receive my award!

Drei Freunde. Drei Missionen.

Buchtitel: Beastlands - Dunkelherz
Autor:in: Jess French
Illustrationen: George Ermos
Verlag: DK

Rezension:

This week, nature lovers, writers, editors and publishers gathered at @elmleynature to celebrate this year’s @wainwrightprize awards. A gathering of friends old and new, of kindred spirits and a hive of inspiration and passion for all things nature. This year, I had a small human in tow, and was lucky enough to share in his experience as he soaked up the incredible natural wonders of Elmley. That brings me to #MyWainwrightPledge. This year, the Wainwright prize are encouraging everyone to make one simple promise for nature. If you join in you may even win a prize! Just post your pledge along with the hashtag. My pledge is to bring him up wild. Thank you @elmleynature for making that so easy this week.

What a shortlist it was! Some amazing books by some of my favourite people. Modern nature readers are spoilt for choice 😍❤️🥰. Congratulations to Otherlands for taking home both the kids non fiction and the overall children’s prize 😍.

Happy publication day to @_jess_french and @dlongillustrator for their absolutely breathtaking #microlife which is part of the incredible (and passionately loved in my library and at home) #anthologies series published by @dkbooks

I love this series so much that when I was asked to choose some beautiful books for the main prizes at Prize Giving last year, I chose a variety from this series. They went down a storm!

Thank you so much to @lizz_on_tour at DK for sending me my stunning copy. I was very lucky to have my first read of it by the sea, learning about microscopic flora and fauna right IN FRONT of me! I noticed the lichen for example as I was choosing which of the fascinating pages to share. And learnt the names of some of the tiny insects hoping about me, especially in the rock pools.

This is a book that we’ll go back to aa a family over and over again, learning about creatures and the environment all around us, often barely noticeable (unless you look very closely!).

OUT TODAY: Following the success of An Anthology of Remarkable Bugs, BLA’s Dr Jess French has teamed up again with DK and illustrator Daniel Long for this beautiful exploration of our planet’s miniature life forms. From seeds and pollen to viruses and bacteria, the tiny snail that lives in a house of glass to the sea squirt that builds its house from snot! A fascinating book for 7-9 year old natural history enthusiasts to pore over!

Slow off the mark to share this incredible news, but still buzzing that the Anthology of Remarkable Bugs is on the Wainwright shortlist for children’s non-fiction beside an absolute bonanza of incredible nature books. What a wonderful surprise!
This book is a real beauty, with gorgeous illustrations from @dlongillustrator and @canvasbird, extraordinary macro photographs, many of which were captured at @thebugparc, and a gorgeous design job as usual from the powerhouse design team at @dkbooks. Congrats and thanks to all involved 💚🐞🐛🪲🐜🪳🐜🕷️ by @_jess_french
