BREAK CLAUSE SERIES ONE IS OUT ♥️🩷♥️🩷♥️

Eps 1 + 2 air tonight on channel 4 at 10pm or the entire series is online this very second if you’re feeling nuts!

I feel so many things but mostly what I feel is so, so lucky. It is completely wild I get to do this as a job - it sort of feels like sitting at the kids table always but working really really hard and I poured every single thing I had into this show. we had the best six weeks filming in manchester last year and thank god for olly & alice who taught me the exact amount of serious to take things (and for only allowing me to compliment them over text, never in person). they’re incredible. I’m deeply grateful to ligeia, hannah, mark, molly, josh, riz, charlie, nathan, sam, anna, rachel, serena, joe, stepan, lucy, lara, samuel + our entire beautiful cast and crew

I love writing, I love romcoms, I love channel 4, I love love, man!!!! what can I say!!!!!

(& thank god for theo. he’s not ben and I’m not lil but he does make me want to write this kinda thing) by @_jessbray

On this week's episode I'm joined by Jess Bray, creator of the new Channel 4 rom-com Break Clause, and writer, actor (and best fried) Nathan Foad.

We chat about Jess and Nathan's origin stories before getting into Break Clause's journey to the small screen.

We chat about writers rooms, writing for SNL UK, "re-writing" the pilot, stress-testing the premise, and a whole lot more.

Break Clause sees Channel 4 revisit the rom-com genre and follows Ben (Samuel Bottomley) and Lil (Lara Ricote) as they navigate their breakup whilst stuck in the same flat… Their relationship is over, but their tenancy isn’t.

The six-part series is led by Lara and Samuel and hosts an incredible array of comedy stars in its ensemble, from SNL UK’s Jack Shep and Hammed Animashaun to Charly Clive (Rooster) and Cat Cohen (Sentimental Value).

✨WE MIGHT REGRET THIS IS ALSO OUT TODAY on BBC2 at 10pm & iPlayer now!✨

it’s the clash of a century!!! what a pleasure to share release day with this gorgeous gang. getting to know and work with @bedroom_activist & @roomof_onesown last year sort of felt like I’d won a competition. These lads are creative, beautiful powerhouses. As kind and generous as they are cool and funny, they let me into their world & trusted me to write two episodes (2 & 5) of their show I watched the pilot of and thought “even if I don’t get this job, I really want to be their friend”. They also let me live out my long-held dream to cameo as “girl eating chicken in park” in ep4. I’m so grateful to them. When I started the job they recommended I read @sitting_pretty’s beautiful book and it opened my eyes to disability + ableism in a really profound way - I underlined nearly every other line & I couldn’t recommend it more.

The cast & crew on this were heaven and I made so many nice new friends (lol) but shoutout to @edwardbluemel who I have quite simply known since he was three??? Writing sex scenes for boys you sat next to in year 5 religious studies? It’s a rush like no other!!!! No, but really. Kind of amazing when you think about it! Also smack the pony couldn’t have been more formative for me so writing jokes for @sallysmack was VERY surreal & cool. Also ALSO I stand by the fact @elenita_doris should have forty thousand oscars by now.

Thank you Roughcut & bbc & village roadshow. Thank you gorgeous producer @inezxvi (who I stole lots of these pictures off, sorry + thank you) Thank you king director Nick. Thanks Becky, Alex + Ash. I HOPE EVERYONE LOVES IT LIKE I DO!!! by @_jessbray

❤️🩷❤️BREAK CLAUSE blap is out now on channel 4 & youtube ❤️🩷❤️

ah listen, allow me a hot sec of earnestness because it’s sort of been….6 years in the making?! I first wrote a version of this in 2018 after a long cathartic wine with @nathan_foad where he told me I’d go NUTS if I didn’t just write things I wanted to watch. & he was right! whilst I was flingin dead bodies & “zany workplace settings” at my failing scripts, I’d forgotten to remember what I actually liked. This script opened a lot of doors for me and I’m so grateful to @mjwfreeland for seeing what I saw in it & not letting me lose faith. (& @ligeiamarsh who took so much care of it too)

Fast-forward to this year & we had the chance to make a c4 blap thanks to @rizzlybear & @charlieahperkins. @mollyseymour joined the gang with two things: enough big-collared blouses to make a sail & a determination to make this the best thing it could be. AND yikes, she was crazy nice + cool + funny in the process. endless thanks to her & @joshcole777 at bbc studios. @alicesnedden coming on to direct was a dream - there’s no-one funnier with such crystal-clear vision. what she managed to do in three days still amazes me. honestly every one of the crew elevated this beyond what I could’ve imagined. It felt properly exciting to have a team of people REALLY care about something that’d only existed in my head for so long. (shoutout to DOP will, @_charlie_elliot_1stad_ editor & @hettiegriffiths who are also with me on this barbenheimer ride)

I could write a book about how excited we were to land @lararicote & @sam_bottomley as our Lil & Ben. The first time I saw them on camera together I could’ve cried and I hope you all agree it’s something special. how godDAMN lucky ⭐️

& the rest of the cast are you kidding me? @leo_reich @laurynajufo Kate Cartwright @jamalimaddix @damesuevincent Emily Wallace, Gerard Horan & Lucy Black. thank you all, dreamboats. special shoutout to my best pals Sam & @annassemuyaba who I somehow convinced to sit in a pub all day as SAs. you need firmer boundaries but I love you!

anyway. please watch it! & tell people if you like it. heck, a “share” wouldn’t be such a bad thing!!! thank you ❤️🩷❤️ by @_jessbray
