It’s Christmas! Shooting Christmas with @trotterschildrenswear children’s wear is always a complete highlight of our year. Tom completely loves it because of the technical challenge of balancing magical ambient light with well lit product. We love the joy of shooting in a big house like this one and we love the fun of working with all the gorgeous models and team at Trotters.
We shot this back in June over a few days and loved every single minute.

I am so excited to share with you all my updated website - jocoates.com - to officially relaunch myself in the world of freelance.

It’s been a work in progress as I really wanted to reflect not only my years of experience in the world of Styling and VM but also my passion for Film & Television that I’m aiming to transition into and gain more experience in.

So in summary: I am available and actively looking for any Styling, Dressing or Wardrobe Assisting jobs (interiors, product and model photography/videography is my forté) or for Film and TV; any Runner, Props Trainee or Dailies opportunities.

I’m based in Dorset but willing to travel, with good transport links to the rest of the UK, my own car and a train station and airport 10 minutes away.

‘Maggie&Ted’

As we’re nearing picture lock on the edit for Maggie&Ted I thought it’s time to share some stills. These are straight out the camera, ungraded but pretty close to the final vision. Personally I’m a big proponent of doing as much work in camera as possible and on this short I had the pleasure of shooting on the lovely rehoused Leica R lenses supplied by @focuscanning along with the stellar camera package.

Thought I’d showcase an image from one of my favourite shoots in Sicily with the amazing model @jacqui_matty for @cosyfeet ❤️

As part of this international shoot I also organised all the production side too. It was 4 weeks of prep and a 7 day shoot with 2 models, 2 clients, 2 stylists and 2 photographers. It was a lot of hard work but one of the most rewarding and fun weeks ever.

Unfortunately I can’t tell you much about where Ii have been this week other than I have just completed my Screen Entrant Training work experience in association with @film_london and @60fortyfilms

I have been under the Art Department but have been so fortunate to have also experienced Set Decoration, Props, and Standby Art Direction. All that along with meeting people from across a variety of departments including Graphics, DIT, Electrical, Script Supervision and Production too.

Honestly, it’s been like a dream for me. I’ve wanted to work in this industry from when I graduated but I didn’t know anyone that worked in it and it was so much harder to break into back in 2006, with fewer resources and training schemes, so my career trajectory took another path.

All that I can say is that I am so thankful for this opportunity at the tender age of 39, married with 2 kids and learning to see where I can transfer my 17 years worth of skills in Styling and Visual Merchandising into the industry I’ve wanted to be in all along ❤️

- @60fortyfilms for opening up your production to provide invaluable work experience for a number of people across a variety of departments. It’s been incredible and you really have a fantastic crew on this one! I hope to work with you all again soon.

Thank you to everyone back home who facilitated me going away to do this training. I couldn’t have done it without you but I promise you it was worth it!

It’s never too late to shoot for those dreams. Now to navigate and make my career work with 2 young kids. It might be unconventional but I’m determined to make it work!

That said: if you need a Set Dec or Standby Props daily then let me know 😉☺️
