Nicole matched at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, NC for her anesthesiology residency and I could not be more proud of everything this achievement represents.

April 2020 marked a pivotal milestone in our lives. In the midst of the chaos of the early pandemic, Nicole and I contemplated our next chess move. One morning around 2 am Nicole wakes me up and asks “what if I went to med school?” I groggily mumbled an inquisitive “you think that’s a good idea? You think you want to do that?” Without hesitation she jabbed back “well if you can do it, anyone can do it.”

What ensued over the next 11 months was nothing short of miraculous. She packed organic chemistry, general physics, biochemistry, took the MCAT (without having completed the requisite courses), and put together a medical school application that culminated in her acceptance into medical school in time for the 2021 academic year.

These last 4 years of medical school I’ve witnessed tenacious determination and grit on a level I didn’t know was possible. No assignments incomplete. No classes skipped. No examinations failed. No evaluations sub standard. No half measures. No stone unturned. No extra mile not gone. Every last drop. Every time. It’s easy on a day like today to feel like these accomplishments represent overnight success in a vacuum, but nothing could be further from the truth. This accomplishment is the product of hard work made possible by a community of family, friends, mentors, teachers, and The Great Physician who have supported us from day one.

Today we celebrate your accomplishments, but I know tomorrow you’ll be back in the “office” as determined as ever to make a difference in the lives of others. Nicole, please remember me when you’re famous. And everyone else, be careful what you talk about with your spouse at 2 am. Snapshots from a bucket list golf trip to close out the summer. I can’t seem to get the voice of Jim Nanz, the sound of Big Sur, the fragrance of whale breath, or Larry’s steadfast encouragement out of my head.

The Central Coast of California is the gem of the west coast. McWay Falls, Edgewood’s shoreline, and the par 3 seventh hole are iconic, live up to the hype, and will always hold a special place in my memory, but the real highlight of the trip was getting to spend a week doing my favorite things with my brother, Dave. Let’s not wait another 12 years to do this again.

Fun fact, when standing on any 1st tee box inside the perimeter of 17 Mile Drive, Jim Nanz’s “Hello, friends…” plays on repeat on the loudspeaker between your ears. It’s a femininomenon unlike any other. by @_jonathanmack

Almost six years in the making 2016—>2022 and we are nearly done! 🙏🏼 This journey has been challenged by some of the darkest valleys I’ve traveled as well as some of my most cherished and sweetest memories. I’m so grateful for my family and friends who have been there for me in every step along this path, for my classmates who’ve enriched this process and made it memorable, for educators who dedicate their lives for a brighter future, for the faculty and deans at LLUSM who displayed incredible patience and provided vital support in making this milestone possible, for all the incredible and dedicated doctors and nurses who went above and beyond to restore my health, and finally for the Great Physician who worked miracles on my behalf to give me a second chance and make what my life is today even possible. It is not lost on me how blessed and fortunate I am to be where I am today, and I have all of you to thank. I look back on these years fondly with nothing but gratitude.

I am going into family medicine and hope to match into a residency position in a couple short months from now, with graduation to follow in May. It is my hope to give back in multiples the many blessings I’ve received. taken in Loma Linda University School of Medicine by @_jonathanmack
