Brando Babini, a 21-year-old New Yorker, grew up dreaming of playing professional soccer, just like any other fan of the sport. At 16, though, when his best friends and teammates were signing for teams both abroad and domestic, he realized, “it wasn’t going to happen for me.”

“I thought to myself, ‘What was missing? What was something that could have helped my journey? How could I have gone further?’ and I knew immediately the answer was a big brother, a mentor, someone who had lived this journey and lived my mistakes,” Babini told amNewYork.

His answer: Youth 4 Youth FC, a mentorship program between young coaches and footballers to help local New York players reach heights in the game he could not. In the last three years, it has grown to over 1,000 players with 50 coaches who have gone through the American youth soccer system themselves, with weekly sessions all over the five boroughs.

For someone who didn’t know they were starting a match until 20 minutes before kick off, Malachi Jones was one of NYCFC’s brightest attacking sparks and made a nuisance of himself against D.C. United’s backline despite a 2-0 loss Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.

Brazilian winger Talles Magno picked up a calf injury during warm-ups, forcing head coach Pascal Jansen to pick Jones to slot in as part of a two-pronged attack alongside Agustin Ojeda.

“[Jones is] in the process of becoming more robust, closer to the 90 minutes,” Jansen said. “He fits the profile to play that left wing position perfectly, but we have to give him some time as well.”

He worked tirelessly in defense, tracking back when the team needed. He also used his quick feet to create chances for NYCFC and popped up in the right spots for attacking chances.

NYCFC saw off cross-town rivals Red Bull New York 3-1 in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 tie at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite both teams’ defensive struggles recently, both attempted to attack every opportunity they got, giving the 9,000-plus in attendance on Wednesday evening a good show.

“The defensive part of the game was a little worrying at times, but once we’re good on the ball, it was solid, and we have a good defensive organization,” NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen said. “It’s hard to score goals against us. And if you play the way we do, especially in the second half, we should have taken advantage of four moments that we created.”

It’s the first Hudson River Derby of the season — New York City FC and Red Bull New York face off in a Round of 16 U.S. Open Cup match on Wednesday night at the Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Both teams are on the back of losses in the league — NYCFC lost its fourth match of the season to CF Montréal through a Prince Owusu goal early in the first half, and Cincinnati shut down RBNY 2-0 in Ohio last weekend. Neither team is on a particularly rich vein of form, and the Open Cup would provide an opportunity for both teams to refocus.

New York City FC were beaten 1-0 by CF Montréal in Canada on Saturday afternoon, thanks to an early Prince Owusu strike in the 18th minute. Tayvon Gray was sent off in the 78th minute after getting booked twice within five minutes, killing off any chance of NYCFC getting back in the game.

It means the Boys in Blue have collected a possible 12 out of 30 points in their first 10 matches of the season, after previously earning 10 points in their first four matches. It’s left them on the brink of the play-off spots in the Eastern Conference, and they have gone six straight MLS matches without a win now.

Head coach Pascal Jansen has said before that his side has been “uncharacteristic” in its performances, and today was no different.
