It’s crazy how quickly our mindset can shift. Woke up to some bad news this morning and immediately let it affect my mood and outlook on the entire day. 30 minutes later, the problem worked itself out and I was back to feeling great. Just a reminder of how much control we give temporary problems over our happiness. Most things aren’t nearly as bad as they seem in the moment.

I’ve been on countless sales calls and investor pitches, and nothing makes me lose interest faster than someone telling me their investment is practically guaranteed, their returns are incredible, or they’re the best in the business. The second I start asking about historical performance, downside risk, or worst-case scenarios, it’s amazing how many people brush it off and go right back to their scripted pitch. If you’re in sales, I promise you, when you’re pitching sophisticated investors, you’ll get a lot further by explaining the risks and downside first, then finishing with realistic base-case returns. Anyone can sell the upside. I’d much rather hear from someone who understands what can go wrong and how they plan to manage it.

What’s the best investment for the everyday person looking to passively build wealth? My answer is pretty simple, the S&P 500. Historically, it’s averaged around 10% annually, which means your money doubles roughly every 7 years with compounding. It’s liquid, there’s generally no capital gains tax liability until you sell, and it requires very little time or research. I can’t think of another investment vehicle that has historically delivered comparable returns without requiring extensive knowledge, experience, or trading your time for money. Sometimes investing doesn’t need to be complicated.

I might have to call this one the Parker Covered Strangle. It’s similar to a traditional covered strangle, but instead of selling a covered call right away and capping my upside, I sell puts below my position and wait until Friday to potentially sell a 0DTE covered call if I’m ready to exit. This is one of my favorite strategies when I believe a stock has a strong chance of a short-term rally. I’m collecting premium while keeping my upside open, and if the stock pulls back, I’m getting paid to accumulate more shares at a lower price.

Seems like common sense to me. There are already private programs that provide housing and food in exchange for sobriety and employment. Why not expand that model statewide in California? I’d also incorporate mandatory physical activity. When your mind and body are healthy, you’re more likely to build discipline, develop better habits and get your life back on track. We need programs that focus on long-term solutions, not just temporary relief.
